Crops in the Knst. St. P.u i., May 13. After fifteen days continued rain in Minnesota and Dakota, the weather has suddenly became extreme ly cold, the thermometer registering below the freezing point. In Southern Minnco ta the farmers are much discouraged over the outlook. Some say Ihey will not at tempt to finish seeding. In all the river counties the ground is so wet that farmers cannot get into their fields, and when it is dry enough to work it will be too late to sow wheat. Many farmers have given up sowing any more and will put their ground to oaU and corn. Ilt-seai-il. Astuiua, May 12. Advices from Australia to-day say : The government of Victoria is favorably disposed to entertain a request for an increased duty of is per 100 superficial feet of all sizes of Oregon timber subject to duty, and a duty of is Cd on that which Is now admitted free. Now, if our lumber men in Oregon can ship lumber to Australia and compete with the lumber men of those islands, why should there be a tariff of $2 per M. to pro tect our lumber men. There is no neces sity in the world, and it is simply a tax up on the masses who use lumber for the ben efit of a few lumbermen. . A full line of I'r.
