A Mnificant fact in Ainericun politic j is the melting away of the enormous Re. publican majorities in the great state. Oj the northwest. l-'or many years tlioe ma. joritius ranged in several of these states from fifty to one hundred thousand. In 18S0 Senator Conkliu";, at tlr; Chicago Convention when Blaine's nomination was advocated by a Michigan delegation said, "anybody," meaning, of course, any Republican, "can carry Michigan." So i was at that time. Michigan had frequent ly given sixty and seventy thousand Re publican majority. In 1884, only four years later, Michigan was saved to the Republican party by a beggarly majority of 3000, and only because the vice presid ential candidate, General Logaa, traversed the state ou the eve of the election, and made the most earnest personal appeals t hi-(, rami Army friends. Northwestern Democrats really believe Democratic chance for iS'JS are good in Michigan, Wis cousin, Minnesota and even in Illinois Kcpualicand politicans of course deny this, hut it is wonderful to note how cau" tious they are in making estimates of the result-. A western senator, a Republican presidential candidate, said today, in the course of conversation on political pros" pects in the we-t, that he thought the Re' publicans could carry Illinois by 10.000 and Michigan and Wisconsin by 5000 each As he was not talking for publication he of course expressed his honest sentiments" His estimate gives the Republicans a fear. fullv narrow margin in these states which anybody could carry" so short a time back.
