was held for the purpose of considering
the inttr of receiving amendments to the
Millshill which member, desire to offer.
Randall was present but Carlisle was not.
The meeting was harmoniaua. It was de
cided that all having amendments should
hand them in to the democratic members
of the ways and means comrnitte who
should duly consider them and report !
the caucus at some future time.
The following amendments were hand
ed in :
Uy Came, of Texas To place sheep
shears, surgical instruments, cal, and all
machinery used in the manufacture of cot
ton bagging, or woolen goeds on the free
list. Also, to reduce the tariff on woolen
manufactured g oods to 25 per cent ad val
orem j to fix the duty at 2 cents per yard
on cotton bagginy, or other manufactures
suitable fur the uie to which cotton bagging
js applied, composeJ in w hole or in part of
hrnps, j.ite. (lax, gunny bajs, guernsey
cloth, I'TC.

duty on hemp, jute and flax at 2 cents per

building stones, lumber and chemicals on
the free list.

duty on manufactured clothing, bristles
and glue.
By Glover, of Missouri Retaining the
present duties on glass.
By Dougherty, of Florida Increasing
the duty on oranges 25 per cent over the

men were enlisted to-morrow there would

Many of the artillery batteries are provided
with the worst guns served to any army.
Though we possess an unsurpassed gun,
we have no means for manufacturing guns,
except after much delay.

three weeks' consideration of the land
grant forfeiture bill, during which it has
been three times passed and three times
reconsidered, has finally agreed upon a
measure. The title of the bill is a mis
nomer. As reported, the bill provided for
forfeiture of the unearned portions of rail
road grants, and it has been amended so
that it bears no semblance ti the original
form. As passed, the bill confirms about
as much land as Is forfeited,

Portland, May n. C. A. Rhea, a
prominent s'.ockraiser of Heppner, is in
the city. lie tays there has been no rain
in Morrow county for over two months,
and that the country has not been so dry
before at this season of the year for twenty
year. Much spring-sown grain has not
come up, and fall grain was badly frozen
out. The crop will be a failure unless rain
fails yet this spring.
