The Canada question In just now re coivlnR considerable attention - and the tlicnio is not by any moans n now one in this country. Most 6f tho people of tills country think that Canada ought to belaag.lD.tho United. .States- There is not much thought given to tho subject and tho tttnforatyV ot persontit cin give few substantial reasons for the convict ion except that thtf United States com prises nearly all that is worth having on this Ji$difcafid thai tUq" rest natur ally falls within its dominion. One'tliing is certain, thoro is no dis position on tho part ofour people to nc quire Canada by any othor than peace' able means. The most ardent advocates of snttt milflotPdo riot suggf ht"" tho in auguration of a war of conquest It is possible tliat a persistence in unfriendly legislation might in futuie justify tho military capture of Canada, but such nn emergency does not now enter into the consideration of the jtiuestion. It is generally conceded that if Canada comesitjnust bq.by tho free will and choice ifcf-lier pocrplo. Tho prospects of this aro not flattering. While it may be paid, in truth, that, eight out of every ton men fn this country would like to Bee Canada a part of tho Union, it is quite certain that nn overwhelming ma jori(y of.tlie, Canadians prefer to retain exUtinp jvolitical positions and remain under tho Itntisli tiovernmnt. It is truJiterv is now.Bome manifestation of a desire on tho part of some to awaken public sentiment to the advantages of such a union, but the great body of thinking people are quite content with their present political condition. In the absence of universal sulleruge, anil of nn elective judiciary; with a system of government less dependent on saloon oitics: with fewer facilities for the ward bojs and the professional politi cian, and with an admirable code of election laws, tint political contentment of the Canadians is assnred. England h.-n treated Canada with the utmo-t libe alily, and it has often been said, that if prior to the revolution, Great Britain had treated the colonies wi'li the same con -nitration ant co-npera-tion t!:o countries would now h.nebeen mider the same flg. Canada is largely made up of Lnyal ists'and former residents of Great Ilrit ain, or their immediate descendants. and the most intimate business and social relations have always iwon main tained itli the mother country. Tho ureat stream of immigration which has recently poured into the great north west is made up of English people, who deliberately prefer to live under British rnle. The strong religious elements of the provinces also cling to British dominion. The French element is under the domi nent influence of the Roman Catholic Chjrch, and it may bo doubted If any whercuia.lbAttTwwId this great clerical mriiiMifetfUlAwjtmore absolutely than ia tfrywCymnwrgnarveloiia fecundity of leisoTrrr Apnomb ecJids th SUMMONS ember of tho legislature of Oregon 10 following to the Oregontan !
