ground on Monday night, but that near
ly all of the household effects had been
saved. Tho loss is quite heavy, as tho
dwelling was one of tho best in tho
county.
Almira Campboll, youngest daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Campbell,
died last Sunday, aged nlno years. Tho
funeral services were conducted by
Hov. W. Horsfall at the residence on
Tuesday. Tho grief of the stricken
family was vory touching and awakened
deep sympathy.

Wm. Johnson, of Hoss slough, Vns
driving a team on Tuesday when ono of
tho lioreen kicked him in tho breast and
on tho arm, causing a compound frac
turo of tho right nrm and sovero bruises
on tho chest. He was brought to town
and Dr. J. T. McCormac dressed tho
wounds and reduced tho fracture.
Suicide.
On Monday morning A Bad caso of
snlcldo occurred nt Coquillo City. Mrs,
Addlo Mackoy, a young ncmen who
had boon married only threo months,
shot horsolf with a rovolvor and died
instantly. Deceased and her husband
occupied a Iioubo owned by John Baker,
a llvory Btablo man, and Mr. Dakcr
slept in thohouso upstairs. Mr. Bftker
says tho young couplo w?ro at homo
on Sunday night and seemed very af
fectionate. Mr. Mackoy, tho husband
rose early Monday morning, built a fire
and went to tho stable whoro ho was
employed, and shortly camo homo to
breakfast. Finding tho meal was not
ready ho returned to his work, and after
ho loft deceased called to Baker to go at
onco for her husband, saying, "Yon bo
sure and como back with him." Baker
hurriedly dressed and fining down
asked if slio was III, but received In ro
ply the request to go at onco for her
husband. Haker started and after go
ing a littlo distanco heard a shot and
thinking sho had acted strongly he re
turned to tho liouso, and found she had
gono to his room, taken his rovolvor and
placing tho muzzle to her forehead, just
abovo tho oyes, had eai down on the
lounge and fired, blowing out bor brains
and presenting a most ghastly specta'
clo. Tho husband was called ana was
almost Insano witli grief. Ho burst in
to the window when they tried to keep
him from the corpse and tried to take
tho bodv in his arms asking her all the
time In tho most pitious tones, "What
did you do it for?" There is no doubt
but the act was committed under the
impulse of inanity, and no ono seems
to bo able to suggest any reason for the
rash act. Coroner Dutler-went over
from Marshfield and held an inquest on
Mondav.
Dn. J. T. McCormac has received
from a friend in New Orleans specimens
of sugar cano, rice and moss, which aro
quite curiosities to citizens of this sec
tion. Also some scales of tho aligator
gar fish, which constitute a protection
equal to tho war armor worn in olden
time battles. They consist of solid bone
scales, overlapping, und aro firm enough
to turn a bullet.
"Won at Last, orTho Heart of Ashes,"
which is to be presented hero on Sept.
Gth, by tho Marshfield Dramatic Club,
under the direction of Albert Lando, is
a drama of tho society emotional or
der, with plenty of comedy thrown in,
and is ono of tho best of its kind. It
holds tho interest of an audience from
beginning to end. After tho perform
ance thoro will bo a social dance.

The Juno took an excursion party to
tho beach last Sunday, the brass band
went along and favored ns with some
fine music while on the steamer, and
when we arrived at the beach a basket
dinner was served by the ladies of the
party, which was partaken of with evi
dent relish by all.
A little boy from North Bend was at
tacked by a dog here last Thursday, and
received a painful wound on the leg;
tho brute hurried its teeth in tho flesh
and it was with difficulty the boy could
release himself. Tho owner of tho dog
lives near tho hotel, and, unless somo
ono will administer a dose of poison, it
would bo well to have a sign, "Beware
of the dog," placed in a consplclous
nlace on tho hotel, as a warning to
strangers, for this is the third time tho
vicious cur has attacked people ; and yet
he Is still allowed to run at largo, men
acoing the lives ot our children, and of
tho "stranger within our gates."

Notico is hereby given, that for the
purpose of making an examination of
all persons who may present themselves
as applicants for teachers in the public
schools of this county, the board of ex
aminers thereof will hold a public ex
amination at Coquillo City, on Wednes
day, Augnst 27, 1890, commencing at 1
o'clock p. m. Vf. H. Buxcii.

A novel and charming feature of the
occasion wa8 the prosonco of the mem
bers of tho Ladles Baseball Club, who
stood up with the bride; the club con
sists of eighteen ladies (nine on a side.)

ing glances cast upon them, as they
hovered near tho brido, or mingled
among tho guests. The refreshments
wero simply delicious, and bo plentiful
that "ye hungry reporter" has been un
ablo to eat a meal since. The brido

At ten o'clock tho crowd went ,to Nol-
