The Coast Mail. SATURDAY, - - - JULY 31, 1880. FOR PRESIDENT JAI. A. GARFIELD, OF OHIO. FOR VICE PRESIDENT CHESTER A. ARTHUR, OF NEW YORK. PRESIDENTIAL ELECTORS. GEO. B. CURRY, of Grant, E. L. AITLEGATE, of Linn. 0. B. WATSON, of Luke. Want Co Get Kill of KncltMli. Since tho nomination, the Demo crats havo discovered that English is distressingly unpopular in his own Stnlo, and everywhere that he is well known. A recent Washington dis patch snys that rumors arc now com ing into circulation that an effort will be made to induce English to retire on the ground that his presence on the ticket will render success for the party in that State impossible, be cause ho is notoriously closefisted ; because he is a hard-money man, and therefor unacceptable to many In diana Democrats, and especially to Landers, the candidate for Governor; because the friends of Hendricks and McDonald cannot regard him with pleasure, and for other reasons. It is asserted that a desire that no effort hall be spared to secure Indiana has led certain Democrats of prominence seriously to consider this step, and to propose that McDonald shall take the second placo on the ticket in Eng lish's place. flpeecfe toy Hon. Gnluslin Groiv. Hon. Galusha A. Grow addressed an immense audienccat Pittston, Pa., a short time since. He charged the Democracy with attempting, by cov ert means, to repeat the farce of the campaign of 1864 to blind the eyes of the people with the proud title of a Union soldier that they may ride into power. But was not Garfield, Iho volunteer who bade his wife and babies good bye at tho threshold of his door with their blessing, as great a patriot as the man whom tho Gov ernment made? Aye, more ; he was a soldier whose proud escutcheon has norer fallen ; he has a record as a legislator which is untarnished, and which augurs a civil administration in keeping with the noblest policy of civil government equal rights to all citizens. "The Democrats talk," said the speaker, "that if they elect their candidate they will inaugurate him. Of course they will. So will we inau gurate Gen. Garfield if he is elected. They said in 18C1 that Lincoln should not be inaugurated, and they repeated the threat in 187C. But both Lincoln and Hayes were elected and inaugu rated, and if Garfield is elected he will be inaugurated if it takes a million bayonets." A Futile Effort. A Democratic paper attempts with out the slightest authority or backing, to deny the contemptible smallness of English in the matter of his contribu tion to the sufferers of the Chicago fire and adds : "Party papers, when they have to resort to lying, and to telling lies which can so easily be dis- E roved, show themselves not only dis oncst, but very foolish." If tho bare assertion of such a pa per would "disprove" an alleged fact, it were certainly very easily done. But it is quite useless for such an in strument to attempt to do away with an established and well authenticated fact, when documents of the date of the occurence support and prove it. English as a candidate for Vice Presi dent is a mistake, discovered too late for correction. Gks. Garfield has, by his superior ability and an active and honorable life, worked his way from a boyhood of poverty to the position of the fore most statesman in the Union. Han cock has been fed, clothed and paid wages by the Government sinco his boyhood tho Government has made him; and now he is the candidate of the party that a few years since was laboring to overthrow the Govern ment and destroy tho Union of the States. Tile decendants of Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and all the decen dants of tho Washingtons endorse Hancock. Dem. Ex. The shallowest nonsense in the world. But it is safo to assert that Jeff Davis and every traitor who looks forward to a resurrection of tho spirit of tho defunct Rebellion, cordially support Hancock. A majority of the Major Generals of the Union Army endorse Hancock and will vote for him. News. The above if. without a shadow of support. But it is truo that it is recommended that tho ox-Con-federate soldiers contributo $5,00 apieco to help elect him. Cam Sciiukz with his two daugh ters and private Secretary are in San Francisco, they will iuspect Indian, public land and mining interests. Secretary Thompson is also thtro and will probably join Schurz. S. A. Clakk, of tho Willamette Far mer, isspokon of as chiof clerk of tho House durjng tho session of tho next Legislature.
