Desperate Struggle for Totes.
The Democratic candidates for
Joint Senator, is trying very hard to
perpetrate the fraud of passing him
self off for a champion of labor. Ho
k industriously working up a preju
dice against mill proprietors, and in
order to delude the voters of the coun
ty, he resorts to such paragraphs as
the following :
The "Monopolist Union," is going
its length on the Republican candi
date for the senate.
The man who started the story that
we hired U. H. Merchant to election
ecrfor Jerry Haynes, for the senate,
is euner an ignorant ass, or a con
temptible liar, and we are inclined to
Deuevo ho is the latter.
We are reliably informed that Mr.
Merchant and others of the "monopo
ly union" have agreed to turvisu all
the money deemed necessary to defeat
the Uemocratic legislative ticket;
that V. Li. atson, isq., is emploved
to canvass every precinct in the coun
ty, in the interest ol the monopoly.
Now, among men who know the
habits of the candidate from whom
these shallow things eminate, it is un.
-necessary to say they have no founda
tion in truth, and are simply thrown
out as a bait for voters. He assumes
that the people of this county are so
grossly ignorant that they can be
caught by such clap-trap.
It rs true that Mr. Watson has been
trying to get Mr. Siglin to agree to
flieet him in the canvass, but those
who know Mr. Watson, are aware it
will require no payment of money to
induce him to meet Mr. Siglin, and
(trip the disguise from the false is
sues withwhich he is seeking to im
pose upon the people of the county.
As for Mr. Merchant hiring Watson
to canvass, the proposition refutes it
self. It is Mr. Siglin's overweaning
anity that induces him to suppose
that he is the object of such qreat in
terest. He imagines himself a second
Atlas bearing the world on his huge
Bhotriders ; that fhecmnpaign is being
earned on by (he Republicans for" the
express and solo purpose of defeating
him. Nothing of the kind, Mr. Siglin.
A JtUIXOUS D OCT JUNE.
Mr. Siglin wants tho tariff taken
off from iron and woolen goods. This
is the doctrine that plays into the
hands and pockets of foreign capital
ists, to the ruin of home industries
Take tho tariff from iron and in six
months 25,000 laboring men in Penn
sylvania will bo thrown out of em
ployment. Trtkc the tariff from wool
nnd woollons, and wool will fall to 15
cents a pound, and 25,000 more labor
ers will be without employment and
without bread. It will work tho de
struction of our own manufacturing
interest, for tho benefit only of Euro
pean capital. Every mauulaetured
articlo which is brought to this coun
try from abroad, which can bo mado
here, is a blow at our own prosperity,
depriving our people from needed em
ployment nnd sending money out of
tho country (o purchase that which
ouumii people ought, and would be
glad to mako,
Subscuibu for tho Coast Mail. On
ly $2 50 per annum.
Rcptilillctin CiimltilittrN and
the Itepultlit'im Party
Communicated.
The Republicans of Coos county
havo no excuso or pretext to "scratch"
n man on their list of candidates.
Since the organization, no convention
ofourjmrty has over presented such
an unexceptionable ticket. Respecta
bility, intelligence, purity of charao
tcr, "and unsullied reputation, are
qualities that distinguish tho whole
list. All havo been fairly successful
in tho management of their own pri
vate affairs, and, on that account, are
more rcliablo for the direction of pub
lic transactions. None of them are
in such a destitute condition as to bo
tempted to dishonesty, and most of
them havo acquired, by industry and
economy, a modorato competence to
place them above want or cupidity.
With such candidates, every Republi
can should not fail to give them his
undivided support.
It is true that on tho Democratic
ticket there are several names ot re
spectability, reputation, and capacity,
yet it is also true that there is not one
of the competitors on tho Republican
ticket who is not the equal, if not the
superior, of his competitor in all the
qualities and requirements of the offi
cial station ; aud of all it maybe said,
their daily life and habits are worthy
of commendation. Can there be any
excuso for a Republican, under these
circumstances, to scratch, trade, or
vary his vote from his loyal duty to
tho great, liberal, and progressive Re
publican party.
The Republicans have a clear and
decided majority in Coos county.
They can frftter their strength by
cowardly desertion, and allow their
enemy to exult over them for their
soit concessions ; or, thev mav win
for themselves a clear, decided victory,
routing the enemy, " horse, foot, and
dragoons," by adhering to their
bounden duty, giving each other aid,
encouragement and sympathy, and
voting like true men and Republi
cans.
Republicans should sustain their
ticket, because the Republican party
is one of high principle. They sus
tained the Government in its long
struggle with secession, bestowing
their wealth, blood, and sympathy.
They resisted the repudiation of the
public debt, until shame brought si
lence to the repudiators. They bent
their energies to tho resumption of
specie payment, against persistent op
position, until gold, silver, and cur
rency have become interchangeable.
They passed the homestead law for
the benefit of the poor settlers, over
powering the Democratic resistance
Until the Republicans came into pow
er, a continental railroad was success
fully opposed and obstructed. The
great blot of slavery was wiped from
our escutcheon, while the enemies of
Republicanism were singing peans in
its praise. Trade, commerce, manu
factures, agriculture, arc prospering
the people and strengthening the na
tion under a Republican administra
tion.
While the Democracy cling to obso
lete conservatism, abandon their old
progressive tendencv, and become
Bourbons ; the pounger party of Re
publicanism have taken up the fallen
mantle and bear the banners of im
provement, progress, and prosperity.
Jony Lank and his friends are us
ing the argument that "Russell De
ment" don't need the Sheriff's office.
Perhaps he doesn't need the office
but the people want him in that of
fice. The Sheriff is the county tax
collector, and all money paid in taxes
passes through his hand, and a man
who is honest and industrious in his
own affairs is the man for Sheriff.
Let not the voters of this county
make the mistake of electing a man
to tho office of Sheriff because he needs
ill
We are glad to see compliments
like tho following, on our judicial can
didates, which we take from a north
ern exchange : "Mr. John B. Waldo
is well known to Judge Dcady, and
he says that he stands at the front
rank of tho Portland Bar, and in that
opinion he is backed by the best law
yers in Portland.
Mr. Hyde is upon theCoquillo try
ing to convince tho people that they
mado a mistake when they voted
against him two years ago. If ho
vrero half as industrious in any other
business as ho is in hunting for a
County Clerks office ho would proba
bly be more successful.
Thk Democratic candidate for
State Senator thinks Judge Burnett's
remarks to tho effect that there is too
largo a representation of lawyers in
tho halls of lcgi&laton, (loos not ap
ply to him. Well, we will not insist
that it does.
