for " invoking extraneous aid " to j
the coal business, tho Mail should ,
bend its energies in behalf of the cor

Wc conclude that he is a wise man,
and also a very shrtwd man, because,
without attempting to show that the
removal of the tarifTon coal would re
ult in anything else than the ruin of
the leading industry of tho Bay, he
expects to carry his point by the use
of unusual and high-sounding words.
"Wo did not invoke " extraneous " or
any other kind of aid to the coal in
terests; but we simply submitted,
that, while Coos Bay coal is just able
to find salo at living prices, in conse
quence of the competition of coal
brought from foreign ports, if the
Democratic doctrine of no tariff were
nforccd, the foreign coal being there
by given an advantage of 73 cents per
ton beyond its present standing would
stock our market to the exclusion of
pur home productions. Lei him give
this subject a "medicumof intelligent
consideration," and see if any ether
result will follow.
But our learned friend wishes to
help Siglin out in his business of work
ing up a hobby, and he says: "It
costs three hundred dollars towage on
about seven miles on every average
cargo shipped from our mines."
This comes under the head of
ahrcwdncss; it is only intended to be
lelicvcd by men who never saw Coos
Hay. There never was a cargo of coal
ahipped from Coos Bay on which tow
age was charged that was not towed
much more than seven miles. The
average distance towed by these ves
sels is from thirty to fifty miles on
ach trip, and that divided up into
several jobs; and counting the dis

We have hecn asked as to tho cor

and upon examination of a business
memorandum of that year, we state
tho following a the facts with regard
to the matter:
Mr. Siglin first called on (i. Webster
at his ofllce, March 21st, 1S76, and of-(
fered to sell him the AVir. or his inter
est therein. On the 31st of March
(Sunday) he mentioned the matter
ngnin. Not wishing to purchase Mr
Siglin's interest unless some arrange
ments could bo made with Mr. Ben
nett, on the following day, April 1st
Mr. Webster called on .1. W. Bennett .
met him in front of the Aer. ollice : !
told him what passed with Mr. Siglin, i
niul asked what arrangements could !
bo made about his interest. Mr. Ben-,
ett would not like to assist in (
running a Republican newspapor, but ,
! would sell his interest for the price
I that Mr. Siglin would take. After the
Republican nominations were made.
! , Mr. Webster consulted with Mr. Hack-

at the books, and being unable to get
them down to what was considered a
reasonable price, the matter was drop-
pen.
If Mr. Siglin or any of his friend
havo doubt as to the correctness of
this statement, wc think there is avail
able proof to satisfy hin. or them.
The subject had never, t-i our recol
lection, been mentioned m or byu,
till after the appearance o: 'ho above
article in the-Wir.
lrotccllTC ami Revenue Turin.
Mr. Siglin, realizing the damaging
character of the Democratic tarifl'
resolution, tries to dodge the issue hy
making a difference between a reven
ue and a protective tariff; he hopes
to bewilder his readers hy fictitious j
propositions and false representation.
Any duty or t.irilT collected on an im-1
ported article that can be produced in ,
tho United States, is both a revenue
and a protective tariff. Its object
may be revenue, yet it has the effect
to protect our home industries and to
afford a benefit to our manufacturing
interest.. A protective tariff also i
brings revenue to the extent that im
ports may be brought into the coun
try while it exists. ,
Again, ho rosorts to the statement
that the present tariff on iron is ?'2S
per ton. This is not true. lie says
"If the tariff on iron and other mer
chandise reduced from 423 to 410, a
large commerce would grow up, etc" j
Now, the present tariffon pig iron is
onlv47jer ton; on railroad bars 415 1

generally varying from 4'3 upward.
We do not presume that Siglin made
amUtakc; ofcourso he knew what he
was writing about. Ho says ho would
rather be called a rogue than a fool,
therefore wo assume that he thought
he could humbug some voter and got
his sutmort. This kind of work may

TTViv. Tmix Hi'itXKTT lias said in
