The BtrpHbllcnn, Candidate.
It is a source of satisfaction and
pleasure to nil who feel an interctt in
the tucccM oi the Republican ticket
to nolo tho perfect harmony which
ehftractcrized the nction of the Co
quillo City Convention of last Satur
day ; nnd it it still more gratifying to
know that, in every part, the ticket
elected is composed of the lcst nnd
most substantial mon of the county,
whoso personal worth gives assurance
of their election, nnd whoso charac
ters and known business cepneity are
a guaranty that the duties of the sev
eral offices for which they have been
chosen will be ably nnd honestly per
formed. lTATE SENATOR
B, B. Jonos who heads the ticket as
candidate for State Senator, is a man
of unassuming manners, but one who
is endowed with that executive abili
ty and force of character which com
mand the respect and confidenco of
his fellow men. The county is in
debted to him for the opening up of
the Southport coal mine, which forms
an important and permanent addi
tion to our commerce, and he has
been nnd is still working earnestly for
the development of other sources of
wealth which arc known to exist in
the county, lie is not demonstrative,
but he will command more respect
than any other man whom we could
send to the Senate. lie knows the
wants of this region, and the interests
of the district which he represents
will be safe in his hands.
nErnrsENTATivK
Win, Morras, the choice of the Con
vention for Representative, is an in
telligent and substantial farmer of the
Coquillc. lie has filled the office of
County Commissioner in this county
with credit; is a man of mature years,
of unexecption personal character,
and ono who as n member of the
Legislature will be a credit to the
county he represents.
gllF.ItUT
R. C. Dement is a stock raiser of the
south Coquillc, and is now filling the
office of County Commissioner. Uc
bus never solicited a nomination for
office, but his well known ability and
integrity, and his extensive acquaint
ance throughout the county qualify
him well a a candidate, and as an of
ficer. He is sober, honest, responsible
and capable, and the tax payers of tho
county will sec that he is elected to
handle the county funds.
CLEIIK
Alex StaufT, our present County
Clerk, who is nominated for re-election,
has honestly and well discharged
the duties of every official position to
which lie has been chosen. He is a
man who is not afraid of manual labor,
hut was called from his farm on the
Coquille to fill the office ho now holds.
lfo should, and will, we confidently
believe, be chosen for another term on
tho 7th of June next.
COMMISSIONERS
Adam Tcrshbaker is so widely and fa
vorably known in the county that his
lection is a foregone conclusion, it.
W. If olverstott is a thrifty farmer of
Burton Prairie, whose intelligence and
honorablo character were recommen
dations for his nomination. He will
receive tho cordial support of his par
ty nnd of tunny across tho line, and
will mako a good officer.
THKABUIIEIt
F. Schctter, who is nominntodfor
Treasurer, is n thorough nnd careful
btthincss mnn, the right material for
that office. He is well and favorably
known in the county and will be
elected.
A8SKSSOK
B.Giles in n farmer of tho south Co

who will assess tho county as quickly
and thoroughly as any who could havo
been named.

COIIONKK
II. Scngstnckon of Kmpiro is n

loth of which capacities he is a success.
Bucki.k nt ono time possessed
22,000 volumes, nnd though lie fro
qucntlysold parts of his library, the
collection was seldom short of 11,000
volumes. It is a common thing in
London, nnd by no means very rare
in New York, to find a. volume nt
book stores bearing Ins bookplate.
M. Huth, in his "Life of Buckle,"
relates that it was Buckle's way
when composing to pace his room
until a whole paragraph was fashion!
cd in his mind and then to write it
out. lie was a great reader of Mil

Of pipe nnd tobacco ho was a6 fond

would not marry until ho had 15,000
a year. Twice he fell in lovo with a
cousin. One of them was already
engaged, and as for the other, there
wore friends who interfered to pre
vent the marriage on grounds of
consanguinity.
The Ashland "Tidings" says-:
Mr. Wordcn has, perhaps, done as
much, or more, riding over the west
ern portion of Lake county this win
ter as anyone, and he gives it as his
candid opinion that the loss of cat
tle in that county will bo nearly 50
per cent. That is counting the
calves that have been lost from
every cause, as well as the cattle
that have actually died, there will
not be more than half the cattle in
