Dayw Fromax, Chairman. joucrn Simon-, Secretary. The Ilcnrrn la March. Mars is the evening star, and holds the place of honor as tho most inter esting member of the planetary broth erhood during tho month, for he plays n important part in the beautiful celestial phenomenon that occurs in the early evening of the 17th. An oc culation will commence about half past G o'clock and the planet will be liiddon for more than an hour. Mars will be about an hour past the merid ian, nnd at an altitude abovo the hor izon that will insure a good view, while the moon will bo within a day of her first quarter. If tho weather is propitious, there will be no draw back to the porfection of the show. At forty-four minutes aftor C, Mars will disappear behind the dark side of tho moon ; this is called the time of immersion. At thirty-four seconds nftor S he will appear on the western edge of the moon j this is called tho time of omersiou. The duration of the occulation will be an hour and sixteen minutes. A good telescope will increase the interest and grand eur of the phenomenon. The eastern or unlightcned portion of the moon will first pass between us and thoj planet. The instant Mars touches the visible outlino of the lunar disk, ho will apparently be blotted out of the sky. After an hour and sixteen minutes have passed, the ruddy star will suddenly start from his hiding place, trembling a second on the moon's western verge, charmingly il lustrating tho contrast in color be tween the red light of Mars and the silvery hue of tho" moon ; then the show will be over, and satellite and planet will roll on in their respective paths. The position of Mars should bo thoroughly fixed by those who would witnoss the occulation. He has passed thc rieindes, and is now al most directly north of Aldebaran. Jlis size and brightness are slowly di minshing as he travels from us and toward the sun. Mars now sets short ly after 1 o'clock in the morning ; at the close of the mouth, about half an hournfler midnight. Jupiter is an evening star for a part of tho month, and merits attention or tho occurrence of an epoch in his history. lie comes into conjunction of tho sun on the 15th, ho will reap pear on the western sido of tho sun nd commence his role as morning Btar. Urightoyos may pick him out in tho west soon after sunset, and at tho end of the month brighter eyes will be required to catch a glimpse of liim bofore sunrise. He seta now at half pastC; at the end of the month ho rises at twenty-six minutes after 5. Every ono who has watched his move ments in tho evening sky will mourn the departuroof one of its most bril liant adornments. Mercury is tho evening star for al most tho whole month, reaching his greatest custom elongation or mos-t distant point from thosun on tho 20th Ho is in inferior conjunction with the miii on the !!8lb, when pacing bo tweon us and the sun.ho becomes tho morning btur. Moreury, about the 10, will bo in ono of tho three most favor ivblo positions for boing scon by the naked oyo that occur during tho year. Ho must be looked for booh aftor sun set, a little north of tho point where tho sun disappeared. Ho sets now about 7, ft littlo oust of Jupitor. At thoelosoof tho month ho rises about linlf past C in tho morning. fcSuturn is evening star, presenting nothing noteworthy in bis record for tho month. Ho looks u littlo brighter now that his rival Jupitor is out of tho way, but ho takos on his palest nspeot iih slowly finking to tho west in tho oarly ovoninif ho travols to wunlliis conjunction with tho sun, in whoso brliilU rays ho will soon ho erlipM'd. llii Wts nownt 8 :80 : at tho rdutonf the month nt 7. Venus is morning star, tho solo planet to bo seen in tho morning dnwn throughout the mouth. She is .lowly advancing toward tho sun, and growing loss brilliant ns her distanco from tho enrth increases. But even in hor least beautiful rays she will not fail to attract attention from all who watch the eastern sky before tho sun puts out the lesser lights. Sho rises but a few minutes before 5, less than nn hour Before sunrise. Tho March moon fulls on the Mlh nnd holds tho honor of determining tho timo for Easter, proceeding the festival by only two days. Tho old moon pays lrer respects to Venus on the 8th. Two days before her change, the near approach of the slender wan ing crescent nnd tho beaming star forming a brilliant picture on the ce lestial canvas of which tho observer never tires. Tho new moon of tho 10th will bo in conjunction with Juniteron thojlth, and with Mcrcurv and Sa- twoptanots being visible in tho early twilight. On the 24th tho moon will be near Uranui. A charming phenomenon will there fore add special interest to the plane tary annals of March. The occulation of Mars by the moon is something to be remembered for a lifetime, for tho moon docs not often design to put out the 1 tight of a planet. The last oc currence of a similar phenomenon was the occulation of Saturn by the moon, which took place twica in suc cessive months, the first occurring on the sixth of August, and the second on tho 3d of September, 1S76. The dazzling beauty of the grand show dwarfs those of minor importance. But there are other interesting studies besides that of the Martian occulation. Uranus continues in his most favora ble position for observation, Jupiter and Mercury will join tho morning stars before the month closes, leaving the sun with three planets on his west ern side and three on his eastern. The waning moon and Venus maybe seen on the morning of tho Sth, and the waning moon with Mercury and Sa turn will form a trio of stars on the morning of tho 12th. Providence Journal. m m DinuXG the year 1S79, twenty minor planets were discovered, and their number is now 211. Forty thousand deaths from diph theria have occurred since November in the Russian provinces. The strike at Cohoes, X. Y., in volves six mills and 40,000 operators ; 273,000 spindles are idle and the daily loss in wages is CO,000. Kearkey and Kalloch have taken a new tack, and are endeavoring to pull tho San Francisco Workingmen in with the Citizen's Union. Mbs. Lockwood's statement so far has been borne out, and she complains that Senator Ben Hill will not sue her for defamation of character, so as to give her a chance to defend herself. Mr. Searight, a cattle king, has purchased nearly all the cattle in Umatilla county, amounting to sever al thousand head. He will drive them to Cheyenne as soon as grass is good. Mexico is to have an election, and postmasters, telegraph operators, ar my officers and civil functionaries are commanded not to interfere, the peo ple are to have perfect freedom at the polls. The postmaster general's commit tee to report on Wells, Fargo tCo.'s letter carrying business, have reported against the whole thing as against law and public policy and the interests of the Government.
