Hon. 1C. 11. Washburn, who has
boon lately mentionetl prominently
jib n cnntlitlnte for the Presidency,
declines the honor. A Chicago dis
patch of the Mlh unys : The "Inter
Ocoati" has the following double
lontlod editorial: "The persistent
efTorts of certain journals hostile to
fion. Grant, in trying to make peo
ple believe that Hon. E. II. Wash
burn is a candidate for the Presiden
cy has become annoying to that
gentleman, and he authorizes the
'Tutor-Ocean' to announce that he
i not, and under no circumstances
will he be, such candidate. lie is
for Goneral Grant for the Presiden
cy first, last, nnd nil the time. He
further states that a friend who
wrote to this paper the other ds y
that he was a candidate for Govern
or of Illinois, was more zealous than
Wise. J he "Inter-Ocean" is fully
authorized to announce that Wash- j
. ..- . ......
burn is a candidate for no public po-
Mtion whatever, and that it is his
earnest desire to see Grant nomina
ted and elected President. He be
licvos that Grant is the man against
all others ; that he is the man to
lead the party to success and the
country on the road to permanent
prosperity. Washburn appreciates
the compliment tendered him by
many earnest friends in mentioning
his name for these prominent posi
tions, but understands also that his
name is being used to divide and
demoralize the stalwart forces, and
he desires in this way to put an end
to it all.

A San Francisco dispatch of tho 11th
instant says : Some 3,000 unimployed
persons nsscmhled at the sand lots
this afternoon, and after listening to a
number of speakers, about half of the
crowd formed aline nnd marched to
thcofllccof the Central Facific Kail
road Co., and a committee, appointed
for the purpose, sought an interview
with President Stanford and Vice
President Crocker. Both were absent,
nnd the committee was received by
General Superintendent Towne, to
whom they stated that the object of
the movement was to ask the company
to comply with the provision of the
New Constitution forbidding corpora
tions to employ Chinamen, and give j
work to unemployed whiter, and inti-
mating that if the request was not
complied with and distress continued,
it would be difficult to foretell tho re
sult. Mr. Towne replied that he
would refer the matter to the directors
and return an answer Monday nest.
The procession then returned to the
md lots and subsequently dispersed.
Other corporations will be called up
on to-morrow. Tho proceedings were
quiet and orderly.
Another XcniocrntIc Steal.
The Democratic majority Tin Con
gress arc studying the means by
which they may obtain and hold
control of the Government, irrespec
tive of the will of the people. A late
"Washington dispatch says the
House committee on elections have
decided to unseat Washburn, Re
publican, in favor of Donnelly, Dem
ocrat. This will give the Democrats
another State in case of a tie in the
Presidential election. Washburn
had tf,000 majority. The claim ofdlesonie men, who can't keep his
bribery will be set up. It is mani-i nose out of other people's business.

Among the settlers inllio Xchnlcm

hurricane swept through the
forest piling trees ono upon another'

The sequel is thus told by theT -tland I
Telegram : I
Snow followed the storm and
in clearings was four feet deep.
Tho father rcnlizcxl his situation nnd
determined to attempt to secure food
as quickly as possibb, if ho perished
in the snow. The little one was riv
ing for food, when with determination
upon Ins countenance he bade the in

Mubel it was alas, too true. Fort
Grove was 30 miles away and St. Hel
ens, IS, so he stnrtcd on foot for the
latter. The road, or rather trail, wns
.. -
blocked by snow a id fallen timber
that progress was almost itnpossidle.
yet he faltered not. Day and night
he wandered on until tho third day
brought him to St. Helens. He quick
ly purchased the necessary supplies
and taking some lunch in his hand
started back without five minutes
rest. His limbs were so weary that
he could hardly move, yet he pushed
forward, only thinking of the dear
ones miles away in tho valley starving,
probably all deaxl or with dimmed eyes
watching for his coming. Over in the
valley a fond mother pressed her little
darling to her breast, and with tears
chasing each other down her pale and
anxious cheeks, prayed and prayed
that father would come. The little
pulse grew feebler, the childish voice
which but a few days before had made
the woods rinc with nierrv echoes,
was but a whisper, and still father did ,
not come. Hours seemed like eternal !
ages to tho poor woman, would hold
death at bay by prayer and anxious I
pleadings. All in vain. As she press-1
ed the cold form of her little child to I
her as death's film shut the light from
its eyes forever, the little thing whis
pered between gasps, "Kiss papa for
me, good bye, mamma," nnd she was
dead. The tempest of anguish that
swept that mother's soul must have
found echo in heaven, and consolation
wafted from eternity, whither the lit
tie spirit had llown, else she would
have fallen dead beside her Mabel.
The father arrived and the scene
which followed, pen can never portray.
Although he performed that which
bordered on the miraculous by reach- J
ing me settlements ami returning so
quickly, yet his little pride was dead.
He received her farewell kiss, and to
gether they laid her away in a grave
prepared by their own hands, and in
silence wept away the burden of their
grief. mtmmmmmmmmmmmm

the heroine being a Miss Mathews,

other actor in the comedy is a hotel
