The.desccnt of tho Chileans on the
Pcruv'an coast has been attempted
and was made on Sunday morning,
the 22d inst. Sixteen of t'ho enemy's
vessels, transports, and men of w:ar
appeared ofT Pisagua, and without
loss of timo directed their course to
wards tho shore.
Piragua was defended by a detach
ment of IXX) Bolivian troopt under the
command of Colonel Grainer, but it
appears that General Bucudi, in
charge of tho defences and army of
Taracapaca, was likewise in place at
the time. Two parrot rilles, 100
H)iindcns, were mounted on u bluff
overlooking the town, but it is as.crt
ed that they were without adequate
shelter. The fight was heavy and loss
of life great. The shore batteries
made a gallent resistance, but Pisagua
was captured, and Bucudi retired to
wards San Berdenorashort two leagues
from tho scene of battle. A battle
on land must soon tako place.
Beundi ha been reinforced to the
amount of 90,000 men. Prado and
Dma or their columns must also le
advancing toward the provinc of
j;arapaca from Arica and Tacna, di
rectly in the rear of tho Chileans.
The number of the lwtter is various
estimated, and is probably 10,000 to
11,000 soldiers. It is evident that the
main object of Chile is the nitrate of
Tarapaca, and possibly later on, her
attention may be turned toward the
guano deposits in the same latitude.
The Probtlitj For Next Year.
While some of the smaller Demo
cratic papers are endeavoring to keep
up their spirits by making light of
the marked Republican gains shown
by the recent elections in various
northern states, the more candid and
indeiiendent journals of the party ad
mit that the prospect is poor for a
Democratic success next year. The
New York Sun in a leading article
uses the following language. "The
elections which have just taken place
iu several states show conclusively
such an augmentation of republican
strength ar to Tender it altogether
probable that the republicans will be
able to elect their candidate for presi
dent next year." There is no pajier
in the Union that exerts a greater in
fluence in favor of the Democracy
than the 6'iiM,and this admission from
a sourse so competent proves the
hopelessness of the Democrats in the
coming strugghj-
