VA THK COAST MAIL. n i OmclAL ORGAN OF COOS CO. NAtDRllAV, Mori 1, IM?f. WfcrltWiwtpil A Confederate Cob. Kress. Somo Dccmocrats object to tbo term "Confederal" ns applied to the Iftnt Congress. They know it was a Democratic body, but many well in formed men arc not awaro how well that body, in its character and or ganlzatlon.mcrited the objectionable adjective, "Confederate." Tho truth is, it this absolutely under control of tho ox-Confedcratcs of tho South. TIub clement knew their strength and assorted it. They controlled tho organization ; every Committee was an example of their absoluto power. Tho Committee on elections which decides all cases of contested seats was composed of 15 members 9 democrats and 6 republicans; but 6 of tho democrats, a majority of the majoritv, were Confederates only 3 woro from tho Nortborn or loyal oiaics. Tho Gommittoo on Ways and Means, the Committee which controls or fixes the taxes of tho nation, was composed of 13 members 8 Demo crats and 3 Republicans ; but 5 ot the Democrats woro Confederated, Tho Committee on appropriations was composed of 15 members 9 Dem ocrats and 6 Republicans; but 6 of tho 9 DomcraU woro Confederates. Tho Com mil too on Dunking and Currency was composed of 11 mem bers 7 Democrats and 4 Republi cans; but 4 of tho Democrats were Confederates. The Committee on Pacific Rail roads was comosed of 13 members 8 Democrats and 5 Republicans ; but 0 of the 8 Democrats were Confede rates. Tho Committcoon War Claims, the one winch must decide on all rebel claims, was composed of 11 members C Democrats and 5 Republicans; but 4 of the G Democrats were Con federates. The Committee on Commorcc was composed of 15 members 10 Demo crats and 5 Republicans ; but 7 of the 10 Democrats were Confederates. Tho Committee on Tot Offices and 1'o.ib jioaus was composed 01 11 mem- i hers 7 Democrats and 4 Republi cans; but 5 of the 7 Democrats were Confederates. . The Committee on Public Expendi-' turcs, and the respective Committees j on the Expenditures of tho Executive Departments, the Committee on For eign Affairs, on the Judiciary, on Ac counts, Printing. Invalid Pensions, etc., all so constituted as to give the control of them to the Confederates. ; If tho whole busine&s had been j done with the object of domonstrat-, ing tho fact that the Democratic par-; ty are under the control of the Con- j federates of the South, it could not j have mado that fact more apparent, j What we may expect from the same ftourcc in the future, may be gathered from this and other examples of their management. The Lesson of the Late Elections. The result of the late elections in California, Maine, Ohio, Iowa and Colorado, indicates a marked cliange in the tendency of twlitical senti ment at the North, and gives a death blow to the hopes of the Democratic party in the near future. The more sagacious of that party boo and fully appreciate the fact, and some are frank enough to admit tho truth. The Memphis "Ava lanche," for example, says : Southern Democratic leaders are beginning to realize the fruits of their folly in welding a "solid South" for tho Democratic party. For four years the crack of the Mississippi shot-gun in defonso of Democr.itio principles has been board without protest No protest to thia barbarous method of enforc ing a political dogma has evor been breathed by auy prominent Mississ ippi Democrat No compunctions of conscienco over visited tho La miira, tho Singletons, tho Hookers and Barksdalos, until they discov ered that a Sonth made solid by vi olence and fraud had mado a solid xt ii. r,... (Iw Itoimhlfonn nartv. A solid North bids tho Southern Dem ocratic leaders pause. But it is too late. Tho solid North 1ms been made, and James Buchanan will still remain tho last Democratic President for all time. A Most Horrible Murder and Suicide. A Bloomlngton (111.) dispatch of tho 21th of October, says ; A horrible tragedy was enacted here to-day. William Hogg, ono of tho oldost and mwt reelected tituuns of Bloomington, but a mobt eccentric man, who hw recently been unfortu nate in business, on returning Homo at noon shot his daughter Mary, aged 18. in tho parlor; called his sou II lie. aged 12, who was playing m the yard, and fired a pistol hot. through lib head; then stopping into tho woodshwl placed tho weapon to his own head and fired. A Washington, dispatch of tho 20th, says : Tho State Department has advi ces that the British and German Governments have favorably receiv ed the recent circular issued by the United States calling ntteittion to the determination of this Govern ment to prosecute all persons who have violated tho Federal law against jwlygamous marriages, and informing, them of the presence among thoir subjects of agents mak ing converts to jwlygamy. It ap pcars that about tho time of tho is sue of tho circular tho number of proselytes kent to this country was unusually large. Report from con sular olhces at tho principal points of shipment of Mormon converts state that the police are energetic ally at work to stop such emigration by formal notification that our Gov ernment will arrest mul umcmitn emigrants of this sect immediately upon tneir arrival, etc. Secretary hvarts now feels confident that with the co-oncration of tlm nnwm. ments addressed the inilow of Mor mon proselytes from tho Old World wili bo almost entirely cut off, and with tho energetic measures now be ing enforced in Utah, that tbo whole systom will speedily crumble to pieces. Soldiers Ifcunlou. A grand reunion of Carolina sol diers was held at Situlsbury X. C. on the -4 ultimo. Ten thousand people were present, and the town was gaily decorated with union flags. Senator Vance urged a realization of tho full significance of tho meeting. '"God Speed," said he "the work of restoring peace, union and harmony to our country." Dan.G. Fowler said that the people of the North and South must be friends. Xo nation of equal numbers could have resisted the Xorth so long as did the South, and no nation but the Xorth could have conquered the South, lie had fought for the union, and now would rebuke demagogues who sought place by re viving the passions of the war. He might, with propriety have added, that any effort on the part of dema gogues to force anv branch of the gov ernment into a surrender to doctrines, which are conceived to be objectiona ble, by threats of starvation, by cut ting off supplies, or any other high handed and revolutionary procedure, should be discountenanced and con demned by the rank and file from both armies, however strongly advo cated by the ex-brigadiers from the Confederacy. Election Contest. A contest has been raided in San Francisco as to the legality of the Election of Mayor I. S. Kalloch, Au ditor John P. Dunn, District Attorney D. L. Smoot, City and County Aiior nev J. L. Murphy, Treasurer W. R. Sh'abcr, ShcriffThonias Dc.mond.Tax Collector Charles Tilton, and Survey or A. A- Lindsley. The contest is based on the fact that the Working men's convention pledged its nomi nees to accept a reduction of salary and to give position as clerks and deputies to none but thoie rccconi mended by ward clubs. This issue is one of much importance not only to parties interested in tho offices desig nated, but as a precedent on the effect of tho use of such appliances as ioli ticians aro wont to make u?e of in getting votes for tho candidates of their party.
