THE SETTLEMENT
AND
EARLY SETTLEHHF COOS DAY,
(so, vn.
TItlnUTAItIKH OK COOH 11 AY.
Tho many inlets, creeks and rivers,
that enter tho watersof Coos Hay, add
materially to !ih facilities and resourc
es. Its surrounding elevated hills,
covered with fir, spruce and cedar,
have yielded its millions of lumber,
while Its numerous csluarics extend
their Hrlarcaii arms into the interior
hills nod mountains, opening their
timber, coal, and agricultural lauds to
convenient access.
coos nivnn,
Plowing into the upper arm of the
bay, reaches out its two forks deeply
into the mountains of the Coast
Hango. Dividing into two branches
a few miles from Its mouth, they me
ander with a gentle current between
its mossy banks. Now the moun
tains meet tho river banks, nnd now a
rich alluvial plain skirls its border,
with tho elevated hills in the rear.
Now tho mountains are precipitous,
aild now their rounded forms slope
gently lo their tops, covered with tho
duiifo foilago of tho fragrant pitio.
Parmhouses dot its bunks, cultivated
fields and orchards bright in glitter,
ing greon, extend themselves to view:
tho lowing kino aro sprinkled here
nnd there, thick myrtlo groves spread
out their inviting shades, nud the
whole scene inspires admiration
of ita beauty. It is a stream whoso
picturesque and changing panorama
impresses tho lover of rural landscape,
and invites to Arcadian quietness and
hmco. Its rieli soil and soft climate
reward the agricultural population
with abundant harvests, and tho va
rious industries of tho bay furnish a
convenient market for its products.
KAMA SinTI.nilt".
Among its early settlers may be
mentioned Davis, Landreth, Hudson,
Collvcr, Amos and Anson Hogors,
Hogno, McICnight, Yokum, Jackson,
W. I). L. P. (that's all of 'cm) Smith,
and others. Thete were tho pioneers
who began with a log cabin, toiled
early and late, cleared away the tan
gled, woody, bottoms, and gradually
saw, by the force of persistent labor,
their broad fields extending wider and
wider, and thoir residences and store
houses rising around them, until the
wilderness blossomed, and thoir rough
homes became places of happy com
fort anil inviting beauty. Coos river
is now settled, in every nook and cor
ner, by a thriving people, who count
their numbers by the hundreds.
W. II. JACKSON.
Mr. Jackson was also an early set
tler on tho Coquille. Ho served ten
consecutive years as our county clerk,
with much credit nnd popular appro

At an caily period, ono of iho Coos
river bachelor's had become weary of
his secluded life, and longed for soma
sweet Kvo to direct his household, to
prepare the savory meal, nnd share
liis lonely cot. In the neighborhood
of liis rich bottom, dwelt a maiden of
"sweet sixteen." They met, and Cu
pid's darts soon caus-ed "their two
hearts to beat as one." The marriage
license wns procured, tho Co. Judge
wns summoned to his homo to perforin
tlio ceremony, and rested there for
tho night. In the morning tho ex
pectant bridegroom hastened to the
homo of his lady love to arrange tho
neeei-sary preliminaries. Lo! tho
maiden had changed her mind, and
had lied to a place of concealment.
While the Judge was conning over tho
marriage service, and thinking over
liis probable feo, tho bachelor returned
with fire, in his oyo, and with a Mae
Wrutof iniprecatiou announced tho
event. Tho Judge wont home, reflect

Ho was the eldest of its members, and
exhibited tho nplrit of youth, that led

tho "company" had dissolved, and
their exaggerated hopes had crumbled
away, ho gathered his properly and
energies, and battled with manly hope.
In thoso days, tho house of Mr. Noble,
at Empire City, was reputed for its
abundant and savor table, nnd its
quiot accommodation for travelers,
Irs. Noble, buxom, ''fair nnd thirty,"
w'as the nctlvo mistress, and they pros

of their many guests and friends. Mr.
Noblo was an honest; quiet old gentle

in the respect of all who knew him.

His daily life and deportment exhibit

now laboring at his mechanical trade,
now representing Coos county in the

Tho comfortable independence which
ho has acquired, are the results of his
personal skill and prudence.
I.VCinKN'T.
Mr. Hacker's brother, familiarily
known as Hill," was at times, unfor

his mental equilibrium, and ylicn
greatly disturbed, his discourse was
amusingly rapid ami quaint. On ono
occasion, happening to seo Ins broth

With oaths and curses, ho asserted
that there was more than one Hacker,
and that it was impudent as.mraneo
for any Hacker to claim to bo the

toriously a Hacker.
I'. FLAKAQAX
Was the earliest of the early settlors.
AtHandolph, his pack train and store

lucrative business. Later, ho becamo
associated in tho partnership of tho

its success. Ho may bo regarded as
ono of the col id men of Coos Hay. At
