John Iiollirop Motley wns born iu
Doroheslor, Mft-snolmsetts on April 15,
181. His biographer tolls us that tho
historinn'a lifo was snvel n IiundriHl
years before ho was born. Ono of his
rnsternsl aneestow, n .child llvintt in
ilavorhttl, lUaasnohusolts, was hidden
by R houso-msid umlnr a. Tro-li-tnh in
the cellar of hor fnthor's hoiuo, when it
was a-jwuea by Indians iu 1.08. Tlio
eavftges misscil thoir prey by this comi
cal contrivance, aud Motloy thus became
ft possible human being a hundred and
six years before ho outorod life. "IUs
father waa a prosperous Doston mer
chant who hnd Irish blood in his veins,
and his mother waa a daughter of that
.race of Lothrep whioh has givou so
many excellent Vrotestant clergymen to
New England churches. Thomas Mot
ley, tho father, is still remembered in
Uoston sji ono of tho finest of that old
school of commercial mou who were
prominent in society as woll as iu com
merce, and in whom the sagacity of tho
merchant waa combined with tho man
ners and the sentiments of tho accom
plished and genial gentleman. Tho
mother, by tho testimony of all who
knew hor, waa remarkable for her some
That regal beautr, for " tho charm of
hor serono and noulo iirvsonco," and for
tho admirable way in which she per
formed all tho duties of n matron. The
son was one of those pre-eminently
handsomo boys who, as tho world govs,
seem doomed to bo ruined because for
tune has saved them from laboring for
a living, and nature has been prodigal
inhvYuhinc upon them nhvsical beautr.
"When Motley had grown to man's es
tale, Ladr Byron declared that he more
resembled her husband thau any pcrsou
she had over met ; but Wendell Phil
lips, his playmate and olassmato, objects
to this opinion on iut, ground that Mot
loy was handsomer tLan Byron. Aud
hero it may bo woll to state that Mr.
Phillips, though the greatest ieouooUst
of institutions and reputations that
modorn New England has evor seen,
has always been exceedingly tendsr to
Motley, though Motley must havo often
offended him by the course he took in
political affairs, , It may also be said
that Motlev nover said a harsh word of
Phillips. "Tho aiToctiou between them
was so closo that though thoy took
eventually, however, to the game goal,
eacu instinctively rocognizetl tne inseg
ritr of tho other, while ther soemetl
diametrically opihjsch! in methoils as
.well as aims. There can be no stronger
evidenco than this of Motley s strong
hold on tho hearts of all his classmates
during the " ups and downs " of his
subsequent career.
Tho beautiful boy was saved from
being spoiled- by a combination in his
nature of an iumenso intellectual
ambition with a corresponding self
distrust. To tho end of his life ho was
consumed with a desire to jwrforui
great things, aud to tho end of Ids life
ho was painfully sensible that he had
not come up to his lofty ideal. Like
many other young men of genius, ho
was desultory in his studies, and in
school and college never reached the
standard of " the cood boy" or tLo dil
igent student. Hh intellect developed
by a process of intellectual irritation.
A certain swiftness of mind, catching
qniczly at the spirit of what he studied,
but neglecting tho orderly technicali
ties which denote the progress of a stu
dent in his class, distinguished his
course through school and college. All
his schoolmates and classmate hod im
mense confidence in tho brilliancy of
his talents, but his " grade " did not
1 correspond with his reputatioo. His
fellow-students were also sometimes oi
fended by the almost cynical haughti
ness of his behavior, titill his reserve
would so often give wsy to a hilarious
sympathy with their pursuits, that he
never lost popularity amid all the eccen
tricities of seclusion in which ho iu
i dulcred. His great distinction, in which
i couego exuiuuions was so goou a- io m-
uuca sneu a trainee scliour as Joiepu
Cogswell to send it to Madame Goethe.
Her reply was signiucant. " l wisn,
sho said. " to see tho first Iook that
young man will write." . J', II ip
