Ag Department To Observe 25th Anniversary July 1 July 1 is an important date to many people. But July 1, 1956, is especially important to the state department of agri culture for on that date the department will round out its 25th year as a member of Ore gon government. On July 1, 1931, 17 separate state boards, commissions and committees serving farmers, in dustry and the consumer were merged into one organization, the state department of agri culture. Julius L. Meier, then gover nor, appointed Max Gehlhar as the first director of Oregon ag riculture. Headquarters were set up in Salem on the second floor of a 12th street state-leased building, since named the Ag riculture building. The work was divided into six divisions: administration, plant industry, animal industry, food and dairies, grain inspec tion and market enforcement.
