Central Point VOLUME XXVIII Bishop Resigns School Board, Effective July 1 Hal E. Bishop of Gold Hill, member of the board of direct ors of School District 6, submit ted a letter of resignation Mon day evening, June 11, to other members of the board. In in his letter, Bishop asked that the resignation become ef fective July 1. He explained that the requirements of his job will not permit him to attend board meetings in the future. He has served as a member of the board of directors for the past six years and is a former chairman of the board. He is employed as a sales represent ative for Electrical Products of Medford. Members of the board will make an appointment to fill Bishop’s term at the July meet ing. The appointment will be effective until the next regular school board election in June, 1957. Other members of the board are Don Patterson, chairman, Norman Gail, C. W. Anhom and Lester James. Mrs. Robt. Nagle To Report News Mrs. Robert Nagle of the Wil low Springs district near Cen tral Point has accepted the post of community correspondent for the Central Point American in that district. Mrs. Nagle is taking over the position from Mrs. Dean Gairson. Mrs. Gairson and her family rec ently moved to California. Her first column is appearing in this week’s edition of the American. JOINS TUCKER AGENCY Wayne “Wink” Newnham of Gold Hill has joined the book keeping department of the Tuck er Agency in Medford. “Wink,” a graduate of Crater High school, attended Robertson School of Business. The firm is owned by Sterling Tucker of Central Point. GUESTS FROM FLORIDA Navy Lieut. Hollen Herrin and family are visiting from Pen sacola, Florida, at the home of his sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Darras. Herrin is at tached to the Naval Training Station at Pensacola. CENTRAL POINT. JACKSON COUNTY. OREGON Chastain to Quit Job Friday of This Week Police Chief Oran Chastain will end his service with the city of Central Point this week. His resignation last week was effective July 1. He will spend his two weeks annual vacation time beginning Friday, attend ing a National Guard encamp ment at Fort Lewis. Washing ton, with about 37 other Central Point men. All-Women Team To Give Degrees At Grange Meet First and second degrees will be exemplified at the regular meeting of Central Point Grange at 8 p.m. Friday, June 15, at the Grange hall. The degrees will be given by the all-women team, with the degree captain, Mrs. Walter Mang, in charge. Two candidates taking the degrees are Mr. and Mrs. Ben Darras of Central Point. Master Harold Gebhard will preside at the grange session. Serving committee for the evening is composed of the Walter Jensens, Scott Hamiltons, William Fishers and Ben Eck- holm. All women are asked to bring sandwiches. Display table will be in charge of Mrs. Arnold Bohnert, who will have articles on Ceylon and will demonstrate wearing a sar- ri. Gilbert Sr. of Cen tral Point, night patrolman since January, 1956, has submitted his resignation to members of the police committee of the city council. Gilbert has asked that the resignation become effective on July 1. He has indicated that he will take employment at a White City mill. M. C. Gleason, councilman and chairman of the police commit tee, reported that seven applica tions have been received for the police chief position being va cated by Oran Chastain. The committee expects to meet this evening, Thursday, to re view the applications. Three Minors Fined For Illegal Liquor Three young men, 19 and 20 years of age, were found guilty in Central Point recorders court June 9 on a charge of illegally possessing alcoholic liqpor. All were found guilty and fined $25 each. The men are Ray Lavonne Cummings, Medford; James Lee Roberts, Central Point, and Don ald Day Huntley, Medford. VISIT IN ITALY Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ghelardi of Jacksonville highway left about two weeks ago to visit relatives in Italy. They expect to be gone until late Septem ber. They left here May 29 and arrived in Italy May 31. They are parents of Leo Ghelardi and Mrs. Sterling Tucker. Public Hearing Set Thursday To Review Budget for City A public hearing on the 1956- 57 budget for the City of Cen tral Point will be held at 8 p.m. next Thursday, June 21, at the city hall. The meeting is open to the public. Any person subject to the proposed levy or levies will be heard in favor or against any of the proposed budget. Central Point Odd Fellows To Note 50th Anniversary Eyes of the Odd Fellow world in Oregon will be focused on Central Point this Saturday evening. June 16, when Central Point lodge 193. IOOF. will ob serve its 50th anniversary. The local lodge was instituted on June 14, 1906. An open meeting will be held at 8 p.m. in the Central Point Grange hall. All Odd Fellows. Rebekahs and the public are in vited to attend. The program for the evening will consist of a speaker on Odd fellowship, entertainment, re freshments and dancing. The two main speakers for the evening will be William A. Cart er. Portland, and Ralph Russell, Roseburg. Both of these men are past grand masters of the IOOF for the state of Oregon. Carter, who now practices law AMERICAN 105 Pupils Attend Summer Classes One hundred five youngsters are enrolled in primary, inter mediate and upper grades in the annual summer school program being conducted at Central Point Elementary school. Classes began Monday morn ing, June 11. Four critic teachers are sup ervising classes. They will be joined by 12 to 16 student teach ers from Southern Oregon Col lege of Education at Ashland. The critic teachers are Dor othy Masters, primary grades; Arthur Phillips, intermediate grades; Dave Hill and Richard Traylor, upper grades. A new starting time for class es has also been announced. Classes will begin at 9:30 am. and run until 12 noon. Previous starting time was 9 am. School Custodians Attend Conference The annual conference of the Oregon School Employees As sociation, who membership is made up of custodians, cafeteria workers and bus drivers, is meeting this week at the Med ford Senior High school. This meeting is held annually and is in a different part of the state each year. Because of its nearness, the custodians of all schools in Dis trict 6 will attend. Many sub jects are discussed by experienc ed men in their fields The program will be directed by Elmer Halstead from the state department of vocational education. Supt. H. P. Jewett will have charge of two ses sions on Friday and Saturday discussing the topic, “Public Relations.* San Jose Student Assists Whitney Dick Jones, student of San Jose Bible College, is spending the summer in Central Point to assist Don Whitney as minister at the Church of Christ. Jones will take an active part in the Vacation Bible school work with the young people and assist in other pastoral duties. His home is in Inglewood, Calif. Polls Open Monday Afternoon to Name Five-Year Director A contest developed last Thursday for the board of di rector position in School District 6 when Don Patterson, incumb ent, filed his petition for re election. Also seeking the post is Bill Askwith of Central Point. Ask- with submitted his nominating petition last month for the five- year position. He is manager of Cheney Forest Products in Cen tral Point and chairman of the city planning commission. Patterson is currently serving as chairman of the board for the school district. He has been a board member for eight years. Polls will be open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. in both Central Point and Gold Hill. Voting place in Central Point will be in the Junior High school gymnasium. Residents of Central Point pre cincts 69, 70, 71. 71-A, 72, 73-A, 74 and 75 will vote there. In Gold Hill, the polling place will be in the Gold Hill school 'gymnasium. Residents of pre cincts 76. 78, 79 and 80 will vote at this location. Members of the election board at Central Point will be H. J. Fleischer, Mrs. Ruth Hover and Mrs. Frances Tonn. Serving on the board at Gold Hill will be Mks. Leota Hood, Mrs. Adah Jones and Mrs. Willie McLean. Merle Obenchain Re-appointed District Clerk Mrs. Merle Obenchain of Cen tral Point was re-appointed clerk of School District 6 by members of the board of direct ors at the regular June meeting held Monday evening at Crater High school. The annual appointment is effective from July 1, 1956, to June 30, 1957. Board members also authorized a bond for the district clerk and designated Central Point branch, First Na tional Bank of Portland, as the depository. The resignation of Mrs. Olive Manley, second grade teacher at Central Point Elementary school, was accepted. Mrs. Manley must return to Michigan to care for her parents. Three new teachers were elect ed to positions for next year. They are Mrs Viola Schwab of Central Point, who will teach a first or second grade class at the elementary school.
