Comets' Title Drive Halted By Vale 11-0 Crater Comets’ drive toward the state A-2 baseball title came to an abrupt halt Monday after noon as the Vale Vikings won the semi-final game 11-0 on the local field. Vale, ranked eighth in the state, will play for the A-2 title Saturday evening at Multnomah stadium in Portland. Their op ponent will be either Seaside or Canby. The ’Comets were unable to find the working combination Monday as they committed five errors. Play was erratic and bat ters were unbale to hit the offer ings of Viking pfitcher Gerald Harrod. Gary Smith whacked the lone Comet hit in the fifth inning when he drilled out a single. • The Vikings put the clincher on the game in the sixth frame when they brought home five runs on two doubles, three errors and a walk. Harrod struck out 11 and walk ed three. Fred Herrmann, Comet ace hurler, struck out nine and gave up three walks. Monday marked the first time that a Comet athletic squad had reached the semi-final playoff in any sport. The Comets ended their sea son with eight wins and seven defeats. They had been unde feated in A-2 play until the loss to Vale. They had won the Rogue League title, dropped Douglas for the district crown and defeated Junction City in the state quarter-finals. Six of the seven losses were at the hands of A-l schools. Next season, the Comets will move into A-l competition be cause of the increased school en rollment. Clarence Mellbye, Comet coach, ended his coaching duties Mon day also. He will serve as Crater vice principal next year. R H F.
