The main item of Importance this week is the primary nom inating election on Friday, May 18. We sincerely urge every person in this area to make a determined effort to cast his ballot on Friday. Thousands of words have been written about the right and importance of voting, and we can add little to these thoughts. However, we are firmly convinced that voting is not just a privilege of every American but a duty which should be exer cised faithfully. The men and women who are seeking election will ad minister laws and departments which affect every one of us. Your voice in these various areas of government is no better than the Annual 4-H, FFA men and women you elect to fill these posts. Civilian Testing Program Information Cited by Principal Information about the Adult Testiny Program has been pre pared by Principal Arthur Straus, Crater High school, in response to many inquiries about the program. The Adult Civilan Testing Pro gram was organized to meet the needs of those citizens of the state of Oregon who have reach ed the age of 21 and who wish to obtain certificates of equival ency in lieu of high school dip lomas. These certificates are based on the results of the tests of Gen- ra! Educational Dvelopment, the same tests that are taken for the Veteran’s Program. This program is primarily for those who have not had anv military service; although veterans and service men mav apply for a certificate under this program if they wish However, the score requirements are higher and the procedure different. This is a program designed to provide an opportunity to those, who, for one reason or another, did not complete their high school education and are now confronted with the necessity of having diplomas or certificates for certain types of positions or for the satisfactions of other personal needs. Rom where I sit... // Joe Marsh Doc Nurses a Daydream The Rogue River Valley Cattle Club Dairy Day for 4-H and FFA club members will be held at Gold Hill Saturday, May 19. The show is held each spring to provide the livestock club members an opportunity to prac tice showmanship and compete in judging contests with dairy animals. Rufus Cate, county extension agent from Newport, formerly 4-H club agent in Jackson coun ty, will be the official judge. Activities will start at 10 a.m. with the livestock judging con test and the showmanship con test at 1 o’clock in the afternoon. It’s a treat when I get together with Doc Sherman. The Clarion keeps me much too busy —and Doc, well I think he puts in six teen hours a day at the hgspital. But Tuesday —a beautiful day —he and I slipped away for a ride around Turtle Lake. Doc’s driv ing a 1956 humdinger — it’s like riding on a cloud. Anyway, at one point Doc slowed almost to a halt “Used to fish there as a boy, Joe,” he said. “Used to sit and imagine myself up on the highway driving a high-powered car. Nowadays, I hist sit here and wish I were down there again.” From where I sit, few of us are ever content with the way things are at any given moment. It’s hu man nature. On the other hand. I’ve been rooting for years that someday everybody will show enough good American tolerance to respect his neighbor’s right to enjoy a friendly glass of beer. When that day comes I assure you that I’ll never want to change back. Copyright, 1956, United States Brewers Foundation It’s taiior-made for you!
