Vice Guardian
Track Squad Wins Sixth Place
In Hayward Relays at Eugene
Coach Ed Knapp s track and
field specialists scored sixth in
the Clasff A division of the Hay­
ward relays held in Eugene last
weekend.
The Comets scored 24% points
for the sixth place spot. A total
of 15 schools from the state were
competing in this division.
The locals placed in seven of
the 12 events. The high jump re­
lay team of Bob Johnston, Don
Von Buskirk and Dick Davis,
teamed up to win first place.
Jack Lilly notched a third pLace
in the discus event.
Don Goyette tied for fourth in
the pole vault. The squad placed
fifth in both the two-mile and
880 yard relay and sixth in the
broad jump relay. The Comets
earned a third place in the dist­
ance medley.
The Comets will enter the
rotary meet at Grants Pass on
Saturday, April 23.
Crater Blanks
Ashland 2-0
Crater Comets blanked Ash­
land last Friday afternoon in a
non-leugue contest on the local
field.
Donn Johnson, hitting two for
two, aided the Comet vitcory.
He tripled in the first and scored
on a bunt by Harvey Tonn when
the Ashland pitcher threw wild
to first base. In the sixth stanza.
Johnson brought Fred Herrmann
home with a long hit.
Herrmann, who handled Comet
hurling duties, struck out 10,
gave one pass and yielded three
hits.
Crater
moves
into
Hogue
League play today, weather per­
mitting, with a double-header
against Phoenix. Game time is
3 p.m.
Gleason Graduates
From Academy
Al/c Mervin C. Gleason 11,
who is presently assigned to the
502nd Air Base Squadron at Port­
land, has successfully completed
the course of instruction at the
Non - Commissioned Officers
Academy, MeChord Air Force
Base, Wash,, and was graduated
on April 9.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
M (' Gleason of Central Point
Airman Gleason was selected
for attendance at the NCO Acad­
emy on the basis of being among
the most qualified in his organ­
ization for advancement to the
grade of staff sergeant. He has
received his promotions.
Gleason, who re-enlisted m the
air force several months ago, Ls
a veteran of Korean service. He
entered the service on September
18, 1950

Pointers Dump
Eagle Point 19-2
The Pointers kept their win
string alive last Friday afternoon
at Eagle Point by dumping the
Eagles 19-2.
The Central Point Junior High
squad collected 15 hits while hold­
ing Eagle Point to one . Jerome
McQuade, starting pitcher, led
local batsmen with a home run
and three singles for four times
at bat. Wayne Allen and Paul
Beach each got three for four.
Weather Stops
Pointer Games
Rain and bad weather cancel­
led two ball games for the Point­
ers of Central Point Junior high
this week.
The Talent game on Monday
and the Phoenix game on Tues­
day were postponed.
The Pointers will meet the
Crater frosh on the city ballpark
for their next game at 4 p.m.
Friday, April 22.
On Monday, April 25. a game
is slated with St. Mary's of Med­
ford. The sixth grade team will
meet the Howard school on this
same day.
Pointer Band
To Give Concert
Central Point Junio' hr ’ band
has been invited to present a
30 minute concert in Hawthorne
park in Medford following the
annual Pear Blossom Festival
parade Saturday.
The concert, depending on
weather conditions, is slated to
begin at 1 p.m. The 95 piece
band, which recently received a
superior rating at the southern
Oregon music contest, is directed
by Harry Movers.

chorus, directed by Mrs. Jeanne
Carothers, will appear in the Ash­
land Songfest on April 27. In ad­
dition, the chorus will sing at
the Eastern Star style revue on
April 29 here Sams Valley school
will also take part in the Ash­
land Songfest.
Mrs. Everett Faber was elect­
ed Vice Grand Guardian of the
International Order of
Job's
Daughters of Oregon at the Grand
Guardian Council session h«ld in
Portland last week, and was in­
stalled at ceremonies held Sat­
urday evening. She is a Past
Guardian of Bethel No. 38 of
Central Point.
Members of the bethel won
third place in the drill competi­
tion held Saturday. Their entry
in class A, novelty division, was
entitled ‘‘Wormando’s Hideway”.
Honored Queen Melva Chew
assisted other honored queens of
Oregon in conferring the major­
ity degree. Miss Marla Abbott
received
an
appointment
as
Grand Representative to Dele-
ware. Honored members of the
state bethel for the past year
have been Miss Vicki Noel and
Miss Nadra Moore, grand rep­
resentatives.

this week were Albert Grandy
and Bernie Miller of Santa Mon­
ica, Calif. Albert is Mrs. Kelley’s
son and while here his mother
helped him celebrate his birth­
day with a dinner party. The
two young men were here to
participate in the hardtop races
at the posse grounds last Satur­
day night.
Roy Colpitts celebrated his
birthday Saturday, April 16. He
had a birthday cake and lots of
birthday wishes at the square
dance Saturday night. Also, his
two daughters, Mrs. Arlene
Reames and Mrs. Vera Sweet,
¡helped to make this birthday
special as Mrs. Sweet presented
Roy with a granddaughter on
the 15 and Mrs. Reames presented
him with a grandson on the l©th.
This is the third boy for Mr.
and Mrs. Gene Reames of Med­
ford. Mr. and Mrs. Max Sweet
of Blackwell, Okla., have one
other girl. Congratulations to the
parents and also to the grand­
parents.
Ruth Ellis spent the weekend
with her grandparents, Mr. and
• Mrs. Hary Ellis.
Mrs. Frank Hammond celebrat­
ed her birthday Sunday by going
to church in Jacksonville and
then attending a birthday dinner
in her honor at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Roy Martin of Jackson­
ville. Mrs. Alma Mallory of Trail
was also a guest. Martin and
Mrs. Mallory are brother and
sister of Mrs. Hammond.
Weekend guests of Mr. and
Mrs. Bernard Parent were Mr.
and Mrs. Cee Haynes of Hayfork,
Calif. Haynes is Mrs. Parent's
brother. A
nephew, Bernard
Haynes, on leave from the Sea-
Bees after service in Korea, was
also present.
Mrs. Jim Holler left Tuesday
for Portland where she will un­
dergo a complete checkup at the
clinic. Mrs. Holler was accompa­
nied by Mrs. Ivan Barns. Mr. and
Mrs. Barnes are guests of the
Hollers from Arizona. Mr. Barns
is staying with Mr. Holler while
the ladies are in Portland.
Bernard Parent has received
word that his mother, Mrs. Kate
Parent of McCall, Idaho, had suf­
fered a stroke and is confined
to the hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Weiss mot­
ored to Crescent City, Calif.,
where they stayed overnight and
Sunday. They met Mr. and Mrs.
James Lees of Eureka, who had
a nice visit before returning
home. Mrs. Lees is the former
Norma Weiss.
