in sharp disagreement over enter- i
gency labor legislation last week.

Ellsworth voted In the House for
President Truman's
recommended
labor controls, but Senators Guy
Cordon anil Wayne Morse voted "no”
even after the .Senate k'lled such
drastic provisions as drafting strik
ers and confiscation Of profits during
government operation of a struck
plant.
Morse said the 'bill's use of court
injunction against unions would be
i "red flag” that would produce
"defiance” .and “violence.”
Cordon
said the action was too hasty to
.permit public hearings.
Whether the three Oregonians
would
agree on
another critical
topic—military
draft
legislation—
was a question this week.
Ellsworth did not participate in
tlie debate when the House passed
a “stop-gap” hill continuing Selective
Service machinery until June 30. ex
cluding ‘teen-agers from the draft
and
ipostponing
inductions
until
October 15. Secrecy shrouded House
votes on amendments to this mea
sure. bpf Ellsworth was recorded aS
voting for it On final passage.
Cordon and Morse, however, voted
tor a Senate amendment making all
men from 18 'to 45. except fathers,
sublect to draff until May 15, 1947.
The Senate concurred In the House
move to grant pay Increases, but
Cordon and .Morse voted with the
majority to limit the extra pay to
enlisted men.
Cordon voted for the Senate ver
sion on final passage, but Morse re
frained from voting with the de
claration that he thought the Army
should be placed on a voluntary
basis as soon as possible.
“Terminal Leave Pay”
May Be Delayed
Veterans were cautioned this week
not to become prematurely excited
over the pending "terminal leave
pay” bill in Congress because the
possibilities are that, should it be
came law, it will be some 'time yet
before any pay will be available to
ex-servicemen for unused
furlough
or leave time.
This word of caution came from
officials of the state Department cl
Veterans' Affairs, after reports that
veterans have started
already to
make application for this pay in
various veterans’ aid offices through,
out the state, believing that the bill
had already been passed.
Actually, Veterans' Affairs spokes
men said, the bill only Cante out of
the House military affairs commit
tee last week.
Although the bill passed the House
Tuesday, the Senate still must take
action, and considerable delay is ex
pected there.
Furthermore, spokesmen said, even
if the leave pay bill Should
pass
both houses there is a possibility
the president will follow the lead of
the budget bureau, which is opposed
to the bill, and veto it.
