EVERYBODY’« WAR
This Is everybody's w a r- -and
everybody must help finance it. That
is the gist of a recent statement by
Secretary of the Treasury Morgen-
thau In which he pointed to the need
for increased purchases by indivl-
duals of United States Savings Bonds
During the next year, said the
Secretary, the nation will probably
have to borrow upwards of »35,000,-
000,000. And then he made this per-
"If the govern-
tlnent observation:
ment is compelled to go to the com-
merlcal banks for the bulk of these
funds, the result will lie to increase
inflationary tendencies which are al
ready serious. . . .
"YY’hen bonds are purchased with
savings out of current income, on the
other hand, such savings help to re-
duce excess consumer Income which,
if spent for a limited supply of con
sumer goods, would tend to force
prices up. It Is for this reason,
among others, that we are going
directly to the people for ns much as
possible of the money needed for the
war.”
The banks cannot do it all—and In
the Interest of a sound national
economy they should not do it all
even if they could.
It is the plain
duty of everyone, out of self-interest
if for no other reason, to put every

Continued from Last Week
On «ny way out of th«» plane I took
one of the most beautiful oranges 1
have ever seen—actually orange color
"for true”—from America. I had
forgotten that oranges can be that
yellow. Meyer and Johnny had come
along with mm and remained with the
blacks to watch.
They, climbed on
top of our pickup to see Mfssey in the
plane.
I brought them the orange
and asked them what it was. They
will say what It be—for myself, 1
said, "It be good, MIssey?"
"You
can’t know dese tings.” When I told
them it was an orange they laughed
and thought it a good Joke. A
minute later they were the big attrac-
tion showing off the fine, fine ting
from "Merica.’’
Sunday night, Jan. 18th, one of
the more civilized boys at the air
port Jokingly said the airport was
going to be
bombed
that night.
What with a plane landing there thnt
day combined with the ignorance of
these people that was all they needed
The alarm was spread through tha
camps like wildfire and more than
2,000 blacks, men. women andplck-
Ins, left “one time"
whatever
they could carry with them.
Pots,
pans, blankets or anything they could
grab. The roads were so choked with
blacks that they started going off for
the Jungles through the fields. Whit.»
men In cars were trying all night to
turn them back and succeeded to a
measure in persuading some of them
to return but they are still looking
for a lot of them yet and waiting for
them to return from the Jungles.
Stark terror reigned in those camps
as they made their mad escape from
what they thought was certain death.
Their screams and yelling could be
heard for miles. You can't imagin«-
the frenzy of these people when they
are terrorized, they are like trapped
animals and behave as Such. Civil
ization Is indeed a very long ways
from Africa when something like this
happens to show the white man Just
how much progress he has made in
his vain attempt to tame the wild
tribes of Africa.
I must bring this to a close and
write many more letters for this
plane, I wonder If you are as excited
as we are over this new development,
If you see any clippings in the papers
announcing this flight will you please
send them, we'd love to know how it
was written up in the papers back
home.
We are all well and I.am back tp
work now after my vacation of ten
days which I took the middle of this
month. Mr. Godley has found It
necessary to devote almost hlB entire
time to Pan American work In fin
executive capacity and he and Joe
are working together almost cons
tantly now. Because of this I have
been taken oft of all Firestone work
and am now working for Pan Ameri
can myself. We have employed every
girl on the Plantations who will work
or who has any knowledge of office
work and are still crying for help,
some of which is due to arrive short-
ly. I have turned my Firestone work
over to Dorothy Marconi who was
my first assistant before and she is
working for Mr. Hall now who took
over Mr. Godley's Firestone work.
My job Is to keep track of all techn
ical and legal papers and documents
for Pan-Am., contracts. leases, codes,
etc. and the job is exciting as well as
very Interesting. A great deal of con
fidential Information flows over my
desk which I could write a book on
but which is better left unsaid. Joe
likes his work better every day but
Is doing quite a lot of overtime with
Godley now. I hope It doesn't last
indefinitely.
2:30 P.M. Joe Just arrived home for
chop and says a bunch of Airmail
stamps have been ordered for the
Firestone staff and that stamps are
about 60c each. When you send us
airmail it should cost around this
amount. Hope you are able to get a
letter to us on the first flight as it >
will probably be advisertlsed at home. '
The mall which we hoped to send
on the 8.8. YVest Humhaw was left at
the post office. No mail was put on
board so our letters are still laying
down at the P.O.—Nuts. Such effici
ency out here, it makes me disgusted ,
Must close and lots of love and'
kisses to all at home. Will write I
some different news next time. You 1
might open the letters which arrive
addressed to us for if I have time
I’ll enclose a letter to you in them.
I hope you are all well.
