'X 'l M E and again novices forget the ■t old rule th a t says th a t you should have th e sun over your shoulder « h en you take pictures, and suffer he penalty of a sun-struck negative. They see something ’’pretty" and ex citedly shoot a t it regardless of th e act th a t Old Sol may be glaring d i rectly Into the eye of the camera. It’s a good rule not to forget, but <t does not mean th a t pictures can iicver be ta ken with th e sun in fron t <f th e lens. Indeed, considering the mmber of sun-in-tront pictures th a t . re being hung in salons these days 4 examples of artistic achievement in photography, It would seem as if the rule Is being broken oftener than it ia observed But. before you tr y for such pic tures deliberately, be sure you have acquired good Judgment in the use of stop openings and s h u t te r speeds, because light and shadow conditions with th e tu n In front a re decidedly different from those when th e sun Is behind you. In all snch pictures It Is absolute ly essential th a t th e cam era lens be shielded from the direct ray* of the sun, else "lens flare” on th e negative Is su r e to result. T hla can be done with a h a t o r o th e r object o r by jockeying around for a position in which a tree or other lofty screen places the sun In eclipse. The resultim. “high backlighting” seems to su round th e subject with a glamorou« radiance. Often, sunlight s t r ik i n ' th e blowing hair of a child or girl from behind gives a lovely halo-ilkc effect. Remember when you prepare you: cam era for the picture that, with most of the light behind the sunjeet. features of faces and the identifying details of whatever the subject may be. will be mostly in shadow, and often deep shadow Consequently a large atop opening and longer ex posure will usually be needed It is by shooting with th e sun (or brightest part of sky! These pictures can be of fasci nating Interest and perhaps a re less difficult to ta k s th an those in which you need detail in the shadow parts. The sun need no t be sh in in g bril liantly. Use a fairly sm all stop open Ing for clear-cut outlines and ellm tnation of detail on the side of th. subject toward the cam era; then make a snapshot exposure. Let your subjects be outlined ag ain st the sky on a ridge, a hill or sand duns, with the sun or stron g light behind them, or have them between yon and the sun on th e veranda of your home oi hotel.
