TELLS OF CHANGE IN PEAR MARKET OREGON STATE COLLEGE, Cor vallis, May 20.— Marlon Caster of Central Point, senior in agriculture at Oregon State college, will be awarded a commission as second lieutenant in the artillery of the Of ficers Reserve Corps of the United States army at the end of this term. Commission will be given to 55 men who have completed four years of training in the ROTC at Oregon State. Following is a portion of the la test bulletin Issued by the American Fruit Growers, Inc., which will be of general interost as showing the changes which have taken place in the world's fruit markets. The intro duction of Argentine pears into :h> se markets in large quantities has materially affected our local grow ers and shippers: It was only a few years ago that growers of Winter Pears in Medford District had little competition in World markets. Hood River, Yaki ma, and Wenatchee had very small tonnages of Winter Pears, but the last few years has seen a tremendous change, and all districts now, on the West Coast, are increasing in ton nage of Winter Pears. Hood River district from now on will exceed Medford district or all districts on the West Coast in total tonnage of D'Anjous grown and shipped. Yaki ma and California will still be tho predominating factors on Winter Nellis and Bartlett Pears. In addition to this change on our own West Coast, we are now faced with serious competition from grow ers of pears In the South American and South African countries.
