T H U R SD A Y, M ARTH la , 1 9MS Giant Electric Hot Bed Will Interest All A drive along the aide roads of the valley sometimes disclose« very interesting things being done by en terprising people. On such a drive a short distance west of Central Point, the writer came upon some thing that is well worth mention. About half a mile west o f town lies the Bohnert Gardena. Here one may find gardening brought to its highest peak of scientific perfection. There are several members of the Bohnlrt family engaged in the art of gardening for profit, but this story has to do with the efforts of Otto Bohnert. As we approached the Bohnert home we were confronted with an unusual sight. What appeared to be a large, low yellow tent was stretch ed in one corner of a field. A close examination disclosed wires leading to the tennt, which was made of a light frame covered with yellow cloth. This cloth was treated with a special preparation o f wax and oil which allowed the heat rays of the sun to penetrate, but at the same time held the heat within. Buried 6 to 8 inches under the surface of the ground and about t) inches apart was a network of heat ing element wires, each enclosed in a lead casing to prevent corrosion and short circuiting. The heat front these wires was sufficient to bring the temperature of the ground to ap proximately 70 degrees. When we stopped we found Mr. Bohnert squatting on a movable plat form inside the tent, removing part of the newspapers, which had been spread over the entire surface of the ground, after the seed were planted, for the purpose of holding the mois ture. Upon inquiry, Mr. Bohnert inform ed ns that the innumerable rows of plants we could see just beginning to crack the surface were tomato plants which he was raising on a contract with the Ashland Cannery to supply to farmers and gardeners throughout the valley who were con tracting to raise tomatoes for the Tbs AMERICAN, CTClfTRAL POINT. ORWOON cannery this year. .The giant electric i hot-bed was expected to produce | about 800,000 plants, which will mean a lot of tomatoes next fall. Besides his tomato proposition. Mr. Bohnert has a large field of rhu barb which is almost ready for the market and which he ships all over the Pacific coast. A full carload of seed potatoes from Minnesota has just been received at the Bohnert farm. These are all of early varieties and Mr. Bohnert states he expects to plant about 25 acres to spuds this year. Already several acres of onions have been planted. Last year Mr Bohnert raised 750 sacks of onions on 2 acres of land. Later will come the cantaloupes, for which the Boh nert Gardens are noted. Last year this crop alone required more than a carload of cantaloupe crate shook to handle the crop. During the busy season Mr. Boh nert employs as many a 50 men and boys to market his crops. A visit to these gardens will prove an eye- opener to anyone who wants to see what can be done in this valley in the raising of garden crops. The Gardens include about 220 acres, in cluding orchard and farm crops as well as garden truck.
