THE CRUISE OF THE BEAR (Continued from last Tuesday) We progressed nicely with the house and were not delayed by any foundation as the ground was frozen sqjid, to within a few inches of the surface, but we found out later that it was not so solid after all. The following summer the main hall floor re sembled a saucer track, a large range in the center had thawed the ground and settled full a foot. Before we finished, a westerly wind sprang up, the same as in the previous year, and piled the ice up about 200 feet high about 150 yards from the beach where it grounded, but the ships were then well eastward of the point, and out of danger. One of the natives shot a polar bear that had gotten trapped and was unable to get away. My friend and I, who had been out looking for bears saw his powerful looking carcass stretched out on the snow with five flattened ballets in his hide, we surely shook hands with ourselves that we had es caped meeting him on the ice* We left Point Barrow about August 20th and after spending a couple of months around the seal island, we arrived in San Visited Friend*.— Mrs. Roy H»le of Klamath Falls spent the *eek-end visiting old friends in Ashland and was the house guest »f Mrs. Alex Livingstone while here Welcome New JESSE BEEDLE. Leaving Port Clarence, we headed for Point Barrow where we arrived about July 26th and at once began to make ourselves ready to put up house ashore. The working party consisted of nine men, six from the Bear, of which I was one, and three from the whalers with Lieutenant Bue- ner in charge. We enjoyed re markably fine weather during our three weeks stay with only two cold days, on the twelfth o f Aug- use we had a very cold forenoon with light snow, but in the after noon the mosquitoes were out as bin *od savage as ever. It cer tainly seemed strange to have the sun almost true north, all the SUMM ONS FOR PU B L IC A T IO N FOR BENT: Apartment* ror rent Enquire 167 East Main fctreet. of the Christian Sunday school «eld their class party at the Jsmes Putnam home on Friday ♦rtning. of Mountain avenue was a busi ness visitor in Klamath Falls Sat- Francisco in the beginning o f De cember. The greeting we received upon oijr arrival, differed great ly frot .1 the greeting we received the previous yeai^ when we brought back the shipwrecked crews. There had been several r.,..ss meetings under the auspices of the W. C. T. U., and the Pa cific Coast Seamen'y union, for the purpose of taking legal action against Captain Healy on account of the tricing up incident. Short ly after we had anchored, report ers came aboard to interview the officers, but they had all left the ship but one and he refused to be drawn into talking. As I wore a different uniform than the rest o f the crew, I was their nt'xt target, but the only question I answered was when they asked who did the tricing up, as I in tended remaining on the ship, and wished to side step all no toriety, I pointed to a Welshman whom I knew intended leaving the Bear and re-entering the merchant service, in doing this I did not diviate very far from the truth, as he was one o f the crew that asjisted. I had sailed for ten years on j wind jammers before 1 joined the Bear and never was patted on the back when given an order. Two o f my captains were sailing un der heavy bonds to keep peace. Oregon.
