come when one can scarcely see
how we got along using matches
rather than other sources of
starting fires or creating heat.
Even now electric stoves and
electric heaters are practically
eliminating matches in some of
the homes of the country and
smokers seem to be rapidly
adopting automatic lighters for
putting fire to their favorite
smokes, but after all, the making
of the first match was a real
step in the advancing o f civiliza
tion.
According to records, John
Walker, a druggist at Stockton,
England, made the first match and
this was a little over a hundred
years ago.

If all of the rain that falls on
the earth during the course o f a
year could be gathered together
at one time it would cover the
entire earth to an average depth
o f 29.13 inches.
That would be bad, wouldn’t
it? But happily, it does not fall
at one time, though some sec
tions have experienced
heavy
precipitations in a short period
of time and suffered as a con
sequence.
The wettest spot on earth is
| in East Bengal, India, with its
| 428 inches of rainfall per year.
The heaviest rain fall recorded
in the United States was at Tay
lor, Texas, on September 9 and
10, 1921 when 23.11 inches fell
in two days. This was as much
as London usually gets in an en
tire year.
Baguio, in the Phillipine Is
lands, has recorded the heaviest
rainfall for a four day period,
when a total o f 88.15 inches fell,
On one day 49.99 inches fell and
during one period of five min
utes two-fifths of an inch of
rain came down.
June and July, which would
group the last thirteen days of
June and the first fifteen days
of July and thus absorb the 29th,
30th and 31st days of present
months. There would be one ex
tra day which would become De
cember 29th, as an extra Sab
bath and leap years would have
a “ Leap day” inserted as mid
summer eight-day extra Sabbath

Some progress seems to have
been made in the proposed
change in the calendar from
twelve to thirteen months of
four weeks each as is being ad
vocated by some of the leading
business men of the world, and
in the conduct of their own busi
ness some of the great enter
prises of the world have for some
time had such a calendar in use,
In Europe, one business, employ
ing 22,000 people has had it in
effect for some time, while in
this country one chain store
business with 1,500 stores has
employed the proposed method
and will continue' it. The latter
is but one of several great busi
nesses already using the new
calendar in the United States.
The new calendar would have n
