Covered by the body was a human soul hid» den to men hut seen by the spirit ual eye to be sadly in need of purification and fogiveness. Therefore, when Jesus spoke if was to assure the supplicant that his unanswered prayer was grant ed and that his eternal future was safe. This accomplishment was demonstrated by the physical cur» which followed. While there are those who huesfion miracles there have been, even in inoderit times, instances recorded when sincere prayer and earnest pleas lo r relief hVve been granted. Present in the room at the time« were certain scribes who witness ed the procedure o f Jesus. They were his crtics and their presence was more in the hopes o f discov ering controversial material thuq fo r good either for themselves or others. These scribes wanted to know why Jesus spoke as he did. Jesus did not rebuke the inquiry but he questioned the motive. This is the important thing to keep in mind in this day when so many questions are) being asked and s« many criticisms made. The pur pose can be either to honestly find the truth or dishonest and hypocritical. We are given another incident in today’s lesson which shows Jesus attending a great feast at the home o f aMtthew, who like Elisha, celebrated his calling to service by rejoicing. Matthew was a publican, a man who gathered taxes fo r the hated Romans, and belonged to a clas with whom no patriotic Jew would associate. | Other representatives o f his type were also present, and in addition, there were many sinners, regard ed by the Jewish religious author ities as unclean. Again Jesus amazed the strict formalists and hypocritical religionists o f his day by freely associating with the«« two despised classes. Comment was made adversely to his dis ciples but was dismissed by Jesus who said: “ they that are whole have no need o f a physician, bul they that are sick.’ The problem o f reaching s:n- ners and social derelicts is ono| that today Causes considerahlo thought. Many good people hesi tate to mix freely with them and there is undeniably some danger, unless one can be sqre that he is supported by strong character and moved entirely by unselfish desire to render service.
