i« ASHLAND AMERICAN G IR LS ’ W E E K Men’s clubs a re doing a rem ark able work fo r boys. W om en’s clubs are not doing as much for girls. Boy Scout troops in m any places have been helped by m en’s clubs, but few wom en’s clubs have realized their op p o rtunity to help the girls. Boy Scout troops are alw ays organ ized in a com m unity many years ahead of Girl Scouts or Camp Fire Girls. W hat is the reason? Do the women not love th e girls as much as the men care fo r the bays; or do we not realize the need? A little girl, in h er teens, came into a w elfare head q u arters the other day, and said, p u ttin g her hand to her b reast, “ I wish I had some thing fa r w h a t’s ea tin g me in here.” That was h er crude way of telling that she craved friendship and so cial life and fun. H er fam ily was very poor; h er tastes w ere above her environm ent; her home was too shabby and b arren to bring there those who com pany she longed for —and she was consum ed by a long ing for m ore of the am enities of life. Many a frail little girl, a fu tu re citi zen and potential m other, is stru g gling ag ain st such handicaps, try ing to preserve her ideals against heavy and lonesom e odds. Is this not a m a tte r of concern to fo r tunate wom en? Girls’ W eek, in m any places is be ing sponsored by wom en’s clubs. In some of these “ W eeks” there will be Mothers’ and D aughters’ banquets; an “ A t H om e” fo r daughters, to which they m ay bring th e ir friends; a church service which m others and daughters a tte n d to g eth er; a high class movie dedicated to the girls; a program p u t on by the girls, for m others; and o th er such celebrations in which the girls bear the honors. If we would make the next genera tion fine, one of the best means is to help th e girls of today. To spon sor the Girl Scouts is a worthy work for any g ro u p of women. If one has no d au g h ter of her own, there is som ebody’s else daughter. FASHIONS. FADS, FOIBLES Pin tucks are the fad of the mo ment. M any women are g ettin g eye- strain doing them by hand, but they can be done on the machine. Dresses of tow tones o f one color are the season’s latest. T h ere are new p ant frocks, with the sk irt and tro u sers made in one piece. Eton jack ets, or boleros, m ark the new er styles. O rgandy is a popular m aterial. S kirts may be shorter in fro n t th an in back. The sleeveless sw eater still reigns. Sleeves vary from n o th in g in sport jackets to short, elbow, th ree -q u arte rs and long in gowns. S kirts m ay be knee length, or two inches below, with a tendency to “ going dow n” and w aist lines grad ually “ going up.” Uneven hem lines and d rapes on the side o r in front, prevail. WE ROLL OUR OWN. washing, such as strain in g to hurry through, cold w ater, not enough soap dishes not scraped clean, first, a greasy rim , around the edges of the dish pan— but these are foolish mis eries to su ffe r from . They can all be easily remedied. Anyhow, if we do and m ust spend so much tim e washing dishes, why don’t we face it m anfully— or worn- anfully— and enjoy it as a m atter of policy? I t ’s im practical to dislike what we m ust so constantly accept. There are sure to eb roses am ong the thorns. Ho wmuch wiser to revel in the roses and forget the thorns.
