ASHLAND AMERICAN W. C. T. U. COLUMN I BY MAY BENEDICT I | o ---------------------------------------- « M O TH E R ’S DAY On Mother’« Day we saw many wearing the white flower in honor of their mother who had departed this life. This is a beautiful custom and one thut «^-serves attention. v\ e never know, it seems what a valuable treasure our mothers are while we still have them. Some of us would give much were the privilege ours to again perform some act of loving kindness for our mothers. “ Back ward, turn back, O time in your flight, make me a child uguin, just for tonight. Mother, come back from the echoless short, take me to your heart again just as of yore. Kiss from my forehead, the furrows of care, smooth the few silver threads out of my hair; over my slumber, your loving watch keeps, rock me to sleep, mother— rock me to sleep Over my heart in the years that have flown, no love like u mother’s love ever has shown, no other worship abides and endures, faithful, un>- selfish and patient liek your; none like a mother can charm away pain from the sick soul and world— weary bruin, slumbers soft calm o’er my heavy lids creep— rock me to sleep mother— rock me to sleep.” While we cannot call our mothers back from the heavinely home, and it would be selfish to do so if we could, still there are many dear mothers yet on earth that are so glad for a bit of comfort and cheer and consideration from us. Let us be glad that this is true and each try to be a blessing to the mother’s that we daily meet. THE SHRINE >t MOTHERS KNEE I have worshiped ift churches and chapels; I’ve prayed in the busy street; I have sought my God and found him Where the waves of his ocean beat I have knelt in the silent forest In the shade of some ancient tree But the dearest of ull my altars Was raised at my Mother’s Knee. 1 have listened to God in his temple; I’ve caught his voice in the crowd; I have heard him speak when the breakers Were booming long and loud; Where the winds play soft in the tree-tops My Father has talked to me; But I’ve never heard him clearer Than I did at my Mother’s Knee. The things in my life that are worthy Were born in my mother’s breast, And breathed into mine by the magic Of the love her life expressed. The years that have brought me to manhood Have taken her for from me; But memory keeps me from straying Too far from my Mother’s Knee. God make me the man of her vision And purge me of selfishness! God keep me true to her standards And help mo to live to bless! God hallow the holy impress Of the days that used to be, And keep me a pilgrim forever To the shrine at my Mothers Knee! — John H.
