At a recent state and federal hear ing in Portland the following facts were brought out: Cost o f bridge and approaches, $3,400,000. Total length o f bridge: 3,618 feet. Ap proaches 5,000 feet. Width of ship channel span 750 feet from center to center o f high pier. Height of ship channel span above water 165 feet. Depth o f water in ship chan nel at low tide, 30 feet. Tolls for passengers and vehicles 'ixed by government agencies. Bridge to be erected and main tained by private capital, without expense to Oregon or Washington, or to counties or cities on either side o f the river. -------------- * -------------- ' “Dig a well and buy an automo bile,” could be the slogan o f people in Jacksonville, Or., according to Charles E. Gates, automobile dealer o f Medford. “ Of course, everyone knows,” said he “ that Jacksonville is an old mining camp and that there is still plenty o f gold in that section. I remember the second car I sold in Jacksonville. The man said he would pay for it as soon as he dug a well. I went over there and he had the well started, and in glass bottle was gold. The deeper he dug. the more gold there was in the glass, until, finally, he had enough gold to pay for the car, and then he quit on the well. It was a popular priced car. but I suppose that if he had wanted to buy the most expensive motor on the market, all he would have had to do would be to dig deeper and keep digging until he had enough gold to pay for it. Any one who digs a well in Jacksonville always pans enough gold out o f the excavated material to pay for the well. I am told that some people once offered to pay $1,000,000 for the privilege o f mining the site of Jacksonville, but the real failed to go through. Without question, the town is on rich earth— possibly as rich as any o f the soil from which millions in gold was taken in that vicinity.” — Oregonian.
