The southern Oregon Normal

been assigned by Coach Caldwell as
he is trying out th m em bers in
various positions and a selection
will be made within a short time.
In an interview last night, Coach
Caldwell said: “ I am m aking no p re

we will represent the school to the

Several Ashland citizens have re
ported to us as having received the
fam ous “chain le tte r” this week.
The “chain le tte r” is a page of
nonsence th at claims to bring good
luck to those receiving it, providing
they copy it four tim es and mail a
copy to four friends— a cost of
eight cents in stam ps besides the
trouble. And in these enlightened
days, still exist people so supersti
tious th at they comply with the le t
te r ’s dem ands, fearing th at a re
fusal may bring bad luck. The le t
ters are harm less and perhaps there
is a certain am ouut of mischievious
pleasure in sending them. B ut for

One cannot b u t question the ob
je c t of the New York people who
have organized a society fo r th e ad
vancem ent of atheism . An ath eist is
one who disbelieves in the existence
o f God. An agnostic is one who says
he does no t know. He is ig n o ran t on
the subject. O f the two, we choose
the agnostic, because he proclaim s
his ignorance. The ath eist expresses
his disbelief in a Suprem e Being and
tries to support th a t disbelief. W hat
object eith er can have in organizing
fo r the “ advancem ent” of atheism
seems hard to understand.
He who notes the heavens a t night
o r the succession of days, or the won
d er of the seasons, and fails to de
te c t a guiding Influence, is not a
reasoning being.
N atu rally , such
folks say they have grounds fo r th eir
opinions. R obert Ingersoll was an
infidel. The m eaning of this word
is “ no t fa ith fu l,” and he who goes
ou t u n d er th a t ban n er to oppose
the C hristian religion b ran d s him
self as unw orthy of confidence.
Again we have the skeptic, who like
th e .a g n o stic , is an unbeliever.
In all these cults, fo r th ey are of
th a t n a tu re (m erely th e develop
m ent of an idea, usually u n d er the
leadership of a b rillian t m ind such
as Ingersoll, or P aine) th ere is a
lack of objective o th er than to te a r
down the belief in C h rist and the
religion of w estern civilization, ad
ded to the denial of th e existence of
a Suprem e R uler of th e universe.
O rganization of this society has been
given some publicity and perhaps no
one will deny the rig h t of m em bers
to th eir opinions, b u t in expressing
them they m erely adv ertise th em
selves as p a rt of a m ovem ent th a t
never can succeed.
E ffo rts to popularize agnotic
teaching have failed in Europe and
in Am erica. Many of us may be u n
certain as to how, where? when, but
we do not deny the existence of a
Suprem e Being. Those who do so
m ark them selves as egoists, know
well th a t there can be no g re a t fo l
lowing, nor well-founded reason fo r
such an organization. The g re atest
minds of history have th ro u g h o u t
the Christian era reverenced the re
ligion o f C hrist. Those who would
destroy it can only come to disap
pointm ent.
