started the region on the highroad
to settlement. Paradoxically, it was
gold in California, primarily, not in
Oregon, that contributed much to
the latter territory’s early .popula
tion. Many gold-seekers, disappoint
ed with the results in the California
mother lode country, departed fo r
the land o f promise to the north.
Still others, whose objective was Cal
ifornia when they started across the
plains, on arriving at the point where
the trail forked, dismissed thoughts
o f California and headed fo r Oregon.
"Glance back only fifty years— a
little more or a little less— and you
see the region o f Copco service in
embryo. Those were the days when
its first timber was felled, when its
first acreages were cleared and tilled
its first primitive saw mills and
grist mills erected and put in opera
tion. Trading posts and stations that
were destined to become in turn
settlements, towns and cities, to see
log cabins and rough sawed lumber
structures displaced by stone, brick
and reinforced concrete business
blocks, came into existence.

“ The year 1926 finds this mid
land empire most auspiciously laun
ched— already well advanced into a
new epoch, and in one respect more
so than most regions throughout
America, east or west. In the years to
come this epoch will be dated from
the beginning o f hydro-plectric de
velopment, which now gives almost
certain promise o f the universal utili
zation o f electricity fo r power, heat
and light wherever feasible through
out the entire civilized world.

author, lecturer and editor will give
an illustrated lecture on “ Evolution
or the Bible, Which?” at the Sunday
evening service.
There will be a
union young people’s service at 6:30
o’clock. Mr. Simms will give the
young folks a series o f pictures, illus
trating Bible stories, songs, etc.
L et’s have the house well filled with
young people. I f the more than forty
rgular attendants at the evning ser
vices will get busy the house will be
well filled to enjoy this splndid ser
vice. They will all stay fo r the illus
trated lecture o f the evening. Mrs.
Simms and her daughter will sing
several selections.
' The address Sunday evening at the
Federated church, given by Mr. H.
W. S’pHver was well given and well
received.Mr. Spilver’s address was on
the subject: Men’s Responsibility to
the Church; and among other things
he emphasized the responsibility o f
the father in the home, first. He
showed that as the church is God-
ordained, and stands fo r the very
best in all that concerns us„ it is im
possible to be a true Christian and be
indifferent to the needa o f the souls
o f the children. A touching illustra
tion o f th* thought was given in an
incident out o f his own life, when,
after his mother had died, his father
a true Christian man, kneeled in
prayer fo r guidance, with the little
son on on* aide and the little daugh
ter on the other. We can not guide
these children aright without help
from God.
Another thought developed eras
that the Christ life within the soul
will naturally want to find expression
in servile to others. W e are saved to
serve. W e save ourselves by believ
ing in Jesus Christ W e save others
by serving with Jesus. This time is
most opportune fo r men to serve in
many practical ways, in extending
the kingdom o f our Lord.
