here is going to object, that we know

out the Nation are to be found indi
viduals as well aa companies with
capital who are looking for suitable
locations in which to establish clay
products plants, beet factories, fruit
and vegetable canneries, small fac
tories, flax farms, fox farms, etc.
Perhaps Central Point is just the lo
cation.
How would these seekers
for such a place know about it bet
ter than from a live Comercial club
with a live committee working on
just such subjects?
The new “ morning paper” at Med
ford is now a reality. The Medford
News is appearing every morning.
Jackson county now has a morning
paper and an evening paper. • The
field, from a newspaper standpoint,
is well covered. The appearance o f
The Medford News is quite metro-'
politan and we welcome it with a
breath o f relief and satisfaction.
Here is wishing it well. As Medford
grows, so will Central Point and as
the daily papers of the metropolis
grow, so will grow in size and im
portance, the “ American,” Jackson
county’s weekly paper.
The burning of the frame building
on our main street last Friday night
marked the distruction of an old
land mark. The dance hall was built
about twenty-five years ago. When
built it was a two story frame build
ing and about the only building on
the north side o f the main street,
looking big and lonesome at that
time. It was used as a theatre for
some years, later the top story was
removed. Of late the building has
been used as a dance hall only. It
occupied the prominent com er o f the
city and the spot will make a hand
some location for a modem brick
— if not grabbed for an oil station,

comes easier to forecast the result.
By ignoring straw votes and putting
the same time in listening to ex-
presesd sentiments from all classes
o f people we meet, as well as by
reading opinions o f various papers
from all parts o f the state, it becomes
more apparent daily that Stanfield
is loosing some o f his once sure
support. The senatorship now lays
between Steiwer and Haney, with
Steiwer in the lead both east and
west of the mountains.
For governor at this time, I. L.
Patterson has a little the best o f the
bet, although a week ago some
thought it was a "toss up.” Should
Patterson be elected, and it now
looks like he would, he will make a
good one.
He is safe, sure and
sane. A god man to lead the ship of
state.
Should Steiwer get elected, and it
looks now like he would, he is
honest, capable and will work with
the administration.
Queer things sometimes happen at
elections, but, we repeat, it looks
now like this it to be a Republican
year for Oregon
The so-called “ Housewifes’ Bill"
for state control o f power with the
spending in the hands of a small
board with full power, will go down
to defeat by a big majority and well
it should, as it is only another freak
law to greatly increase our already
too high taxes.

A question o f much importance to
Jackson county to be voted on at
the coming November élection ¡6 the
removal of the county seat from
Jacksonville to Medford.
At first thought most any outsider
or stranger would think that Med
ford was the county seat, simply be
cause Medford has about 12,000
population while Jacksonville has a
few hundred.
And Medford, so the maps show, is
on the Southern Pacific railroad and
Pacific highway while Jacksonville
is on no railroad whatever and o ff
the main highway. But Jacksonville
has been the county seat for many
years— before any one ever heard of
Medford.
Medford grew when it started,
while Jacksonville is still Jackson
ville with no modern improvements
or little signs o f progress. These are
truths, not insinuations for or against
any town or cause.
Sentiment is with Jacksonville.
Jacksonville is romantic and a nice
place to visit or drive'through on a
sunny Sunday. Jacksonville is one
o f the oldest gold camps in Oregon
and the ground there is still rich in
the precious metal. The court house
in Jacksonville is an old out-of-date
building. It is not fireproof, it leaks,
it is quite too small and crowded,
the'jail is too small and the buildings
are badly in need o f immediate re
pairs. Medford wants the county seat
She has made the county an offer.
Vote to remove the county seat to
Medford and that city will build a
city hall half again as large as the
present court house, and will rent the
new city hall t o Jackosn county for
five years to be used as a court
house for only five dollars rent. Also
the city o f Medford offers to donate
the grounds free to the county for
the new court house when it is ready
to be built Medford claims that the
money spent in rides, oil, gas, time
and inconvenience going and com
ing from Jacksonville is more than
the extra tax for a, new court house
that some say will be about one mill.
Now Jacksonville is not keeping
still by any means. They claim over
there that at this time our county
cannot afford a ne wcourt house to
cost any place from $200,000 up.
They say, over there, that our taxes
are too high now and why try to in
crease them for a new building.
They are also partial to the present
site and present building for old time
sake— sentiment.
Jacksonville has
always been the county seat, why
change it?
The question will be settled Novem
ber 2. We hope it will be settled with
no hard feelings from either side. It
can be and should be.

Rogue river valley enjoyed eight
months o f almost continuous sun
shine this year. Picnic parties basked
in the warm sun of an early spring
along the banks o f Rogue river and
other streams in February. The first
fall rain o f any consequence fell
after October was ushered in, mak
ing eight months during which local
residents l’ved outdoors and in the
wide open spaces. Few districts in
the world enjoy this record.
It is
one which makes this valley and all
o f southern Oregon a pleasant place
in which to live. It is a magnet that
will eventually draw thousands of
other home-seekers who desire to
escape the more rigorous climates of
other districts. Well may this dist
rict be termed sunny southern Ore

The Aimee McPherson scandal
with it’s charges and denials, its con
fession and demunications, its slow
unfolding o f wholly unlovely drama,
ha sdeveloped one admirable person
— an old fashioned mother.

Kenneth is the man in the case.
Mrs. Ormiston has given a state
ment to a San Francisco paper.
It
carries no shrieks. It is calm and is
simply worded.
In it one decerns
that unbending honors that would
even brush aside a beloved child in
order fo right the wrong and that
age-old intuitiveness that
enables
mothers to see. moreal matters with
perfect clearness. That is what she
said.
With this great mass o f evidence
showing that Mrs. McPherson was
not kidnapped, with the warrants is
sued for her arrest, there is no use
for even a mother to try to persuade
herself that the story told by my son
is true. We tried to bring him up as
a god-fearing ritious man and until
he met Mrs. McPherson there was
nothing to mar our joy and pride in
him. Since then there has been noth
ing but trouble. When Kenneth sent
his letter to the district attorney we
were hurt for in them our son con
fessed a wrong ut we believed them.
Now we cannot. There is too much
on the other side. He must come for
ward and tell the truth, clear up this
mess which has kept us in constant
misery since his name was first
brought into the investigation.
Mothers know and children who
try to deceive them are but deceiv
ing themselves. This mother is tired
o f deceit and is too honest to hide
the fact. She wants her son to be a
man and clear this mess even if he
he hurt in the clearing.
Mothers are great institutions.
