HOW — PA C IF IC M E TR O PO LIS GOT NAM E “ SAN FRANCISCO."— The first to fiv e the name of San Francisco to the future Pa cific coast metropolis were Fran cisco Palon and Benito Camhon, two Franciscan friars, who In 1776 left Monterey with seven civilians and seventeen dra goons, with their families, and established the Spanish mission o f San Francisco. In 183.1 William A. Richard son, an Englishman, erected the first tenj on the site o f the pres- ent city on what was later Du pont street and began a trade In hides and tallow. In 1838 one Jacob Loose ar rived at the mission and put up the flrat private dwelling. In 1830 Jean Vloget surveyed the town and laid out the streets and lota. In 1841 two Am eri cans built a sawmill, and In 1848 Captain Montgomery of the United States war sloop Ports mouth raised the American flag on what later became Ports mouth square, and a little later a ship arrived from New York with 200 Mormon emigrants.
