FRUIT IK « " l u l l DIAGNOSES
CHIEF KKC1T TROUBLES.—
A unique hospital (or vegetable
disease research has Just been
started at Covent garden. Lon
don. In connection with the
Cambridge low temperature re
search station.
Here a fruit
"doctor” diagnoses the troubles
of English and imported prod
uce.
So successful have these ex
periments been that many dis
eases, Including the "brown
heart" In apples, have been com
pletely overcome. In one part
of the laboratory, "breathing"
tests are carried out to ascer-
tain the vitality of certain kinds
o f fruits. “ Breathing" Is Just
as Important to a banana, pear,
or a plum as it is to a human
being, and when a fruit ceases
to breathe It “ dies” and goes
bad.
Owing
to
the
scientific
methods which are now adopted
in connection with the cold stor
age of fruit and vegetables, gar
den produce can be kept in per
fect condition for very long pe
riods. Among ine “ residents"
at the Cambridge low tempera
ture research station are cauli
flowers, which are as fresh as
when picked two months a g o ;
pears gathered last September,
which look as healthy as if they
had been plucked yesterday;
and apples which ripened over
two years ago, but have not lost
one lota o f their flavor.
How to Clean White Paint
One of the host ways to clean white
paint Is to dip a piece o f soft flannel
cloth In warm water, wring It out
and then dip It In clean bran, using

I out Injuring the paint.
W hy Shoulders Ache
Typists and musicians often get
pains In their shoulders, which they
diagnose as neuritis.
j
Dr. John B. Caruett, professor of
surgery at the University of Penn
sylvania. says the pain Is caused by a
deposit o f lime salts that accumulates
between the shoulder and arm bone
on account of constant friction.
Once this deposit Is located, de
clares Doctor Garnett, the curative
treatment is found to be extremely
simple.
W hy Paper Sticks
The bureau of standard« says that
the sticking together of paper during
the printing process Is caused by
static which Is introduced by the fric
tion of the paper with the metallic
parts of the printing press. This
gives considerable trouble In printing
plants, and In large establishments
special equipment Is used to prevent
this. Controlled humidity conditions
ssslst In this respect, as paper that Is
kept very moist gives very little
trouble.

Last Sunday afternoon during the

to the grass on the west side o f
the desert near the Ben Peart place

soon under control but on Monday
the will'd came up and started it
