The prizes were awarded in groups o f three as follow s: 5th and 6th graders competed fo r 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, 7th and 8th graders com peted fo r 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places as a group, and the 7th ard 8th graders o f Ashland Medford com peted fo r 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places as a group. The following is the essay by Miss W atson: Eary History of Jacksonville In the spring o f 1851 gold was first discovered. In 1853 Jackson ville was in good headway. It had nine stores, three blacksmith shops, and saloons galore. This discovery led to an election. In 1860 the election was made. J. D. Haines, L. Sachs were acting as clerks. A. H. Miller, James Glenn, and John L. Drum as judges. The result was that Jacksonville was founded by 107 fo r and 27 against. A fte r the town was incorporated they had an election fo r officers. It was held December 11, 1860. Jos eph Burbee received 188 fo r town trustee, S. W. Bank 104 fo r marshal, Henry Kippel 110 fo r recorder, and C. C. Beekman 91 fo r street com missioner. James Cluggage who had taken up mining claims desired to secure his title. There were several thousand m ir ing claims filed in the district. The question that was before them was how they were going to secure their claims. In September 1863 Matthew P. Deady the United States district judge was sent to Jacksonville and held the first real court. In the year o f 1855 T. Vault with two partners sU>> ted a newspaper. It was calle dthe “ Table Rock Sent inel.” T. Vault soon bought out his partners and managed the business alone. He was very successful. He one-fifth o f the total number o f farmers.
