A fter being without a city engin eer for eight eyars, Medford now ha.» an efficient city engineer in the per son of Fred Scheffel who was ap pointed by the city council at its meeting last week. Because o f so much building and improvements going on it costs just as much to have a city engineer as it does to have the engineer work done from time to time, hence the appointment. Plans are now under way for repair ing over twenty miles o f paved and dirt streets including the removal of the terrible bumps on West Main street. Real carnival spirit prevailed at the Walker mid-week dancing party in the Medford building last week with confetti, serpentine, colored fans, hats and Hawaiian leis given out to the dancers free. Local auto tourist registration is now nearing the one hundred mark. Miss Grace Chamberlain and Miss Elizabeth Palmer, well known resi dents o f Ashland, were victims o f a serious auto accident near San Lolinas last week, hey were taken to a hospital at Red Bluff. The car j | was a complete reck. They were i on their way in Miss Chamberlain’s 11 new car to Pacific Grove to spend a j I short vacation. Luke Kincaid, the genial manager o f the Eagle Point dances, is plan ning dancing parties in his hall for every Saturday night in June. His dance last week was the best one held there for some time. The local Elks are planning their annual picnic for July 4th at the Elks’ picnic grounds. The United Artisans gave a very enjoyable dancing party last Friday evening in the Knights o f Pythias hall. ■ Part o f the paraphernalia for the feature o f the evening failed to arrive so the feature was not put on. However, it may be given at a future date. A good time was had by every body present. Work has started on the excava tion for the new Telephone and Tel egraph building opposite the old high school at Fifth and Bartlett. This building will be a modern one-story structure with basement, 50x55 feet, and costing $55,000. It is expected to be completed in 75 days. Frank C. Clark, local architect, is the sup ervising architect in charge while Donegan & Chrismas o f Portland are the contractors. Mr. and Mrs. P. F. Close, owners o f the Riverside Garage, have sold out to Charles K. Williams with W. W. Allen taking over the paint de partment o f the shop. The sale was made because o f Mr. Close’s poor health the past two years. Mr. and Mrs. Close have purchased a farm near Eugene where they will move soon. Mr. Close has been in the garage business for many years in Medford and both he and Mrs. Close have made a host o f friends here. This mine is near the old Stirling placer, and was presumably one o f its feeders. There are unconfirmed rumors o f a strike on the banks o f the Rogue, near Hell Gate. With developed mines both north and south of this vicinity it seems quite probable. The heavy undergrowth here makes anything like complete prospecting impossible during the summer when sch work is easiest so far as weather is concerned. There is no doubt that new strikes will be made here for many years to come.
