ket” s till hang over us, with the
" h o t” m otor In much demand
fo r ’’ quickie” deals.
In recent years, annual out
board thefts hit the m illio n
d o lla r m ark.

Strangely enough, outboard
o w n e r s unwittingly abandon
th e ir rigs, something they’ d
ra re ly do to th e ir automobiles.
When leaving th e ir c a r on dim ly
lit streets, most people ro ll
up the windows and lock the
doors. But when leaving th e ir
boat in isloated areas, they think
nothing of attaching it to just
a single mooring line.
Only a combination lock and
chain, according to the National
Automobile Club, w ill fasten
your m otor firm ly to your boat.
When tra ile rin g your boat, don’ t
ev e r leave It unattended. At
night, locate a tre e o r post and
wrap the tr a ile r safety chain
around it. Now secure the chain
with a lock. If your m otor
starts e le c tric a lly , never forget
to remove the key fro m the Ig
nition. From manual starting
m otors, remove a plug.
Less than one percent of the
owners recover th e ir stolen
m otors. T h is low recovery rate
indicates that boatmen don’ t
take the tim e to re g is te r th e ir
equipment properly. M any can’ t
identify th eir m otor even when
it stares them right in the face.
F o r quick identification, reg
is te r all serial numbers on the
boat and m otor with the manu
fa c tu re r, keeping a copy of
these numbers for you rself.
Just as the boatman looks
fo r portability in the motor,
he buys, so docs the thief in
the m otor he steals. Needless
to say, both p re fe r sm all horse
power motors that m easure up
to this standard. O n e -th ird of
the thefts involve m otors of less
than 10 horsepower. And the
irony of it all lies In the fre
quent habit of fisherm en of
leaving a sm all rig unattended.
Even weight proves no d e te r
rent , with lig h t-fin g ered but
strong -backed thieves lifting
outboards in the 60,75, and 90
horsepower sizes.
T h a t a m arket fo r " h o t”
m otors e x is ts , few deny. The
low recovery rate of stolen
m o t o r s stands as proof. If
someone’s quick to sell a m otor
at less than m arket p ric e , the
a l e r t buyer becomes suspi
cious. Chances are the s e lle r
wants to rid h im self of stolen
goods and in a h u rry . M issing
e l e c t r i c a l connections also
serve as dead giveaw ays. T o
maks a hasty, clean getaway,
thieves often cu? the w ire s and
connections with a knife. And
the custom er failin g fo r such
a “ quickie’ deal faces double
trouble.
