In the latter connection, we would point out something
that teems not to draw any attention from anyone else.
With this kind o f thing evidently happening freely on the
University campus, why is it that there has been neither
comment not indication o f any corrective measures Issuing
from the office of President Fleming or from the vocal
chords of any other state officials, so far as we have been
able to learn?
We surmize that Miss Buchanan and no doubt most other
students on the campus do not believe that an unhampered
use of narcotics can fa il to damage the reputation, integ
rity and usefulness of the school. We agree with them and
admire her for having the courage to reveal the presence
of a very dirty traffic. Too bad that Nfr. Fleming and
other state officials do not concur. Too bad that they are
afraid to demonstrate a lik e brand of courage by acting
upon their obligation to the people o f Oregon and doing
something about the situation.
Since writing the above, we note with somewhat satis
faction that the President of the University of Michigan
has announced that the lim its of his patience have been
reached and he is going to crack down on student demon
strations o f lawlessness and im m orality on his campus. It
can be done; and those university officials who so commit
themselves to a return to traditional respect for good Amer
ican discipline and decency w ill find themselves backed
by the masses o f our people, even though leading In tellec
tuals may lo u 'ly censure them.
