Inflation In Sight
In the view of the Citizens
Foreign Aid Committee: "In
the beginning Inflation is a
wondrous elixir. Butgracfcally
it speeds up like the frighten
ing rapids above Niagara; then
suddentlv nothing can stop its
plunge. Inflation, bom of pro
fligate government spending,
has started here. Since U.S.
foreign aid began in 1946, our
purchasing m edia--currency
and checking accounts--have
grown from $106 MUion to
»170 billion, while our gold
reserve has fallen from $24.7
billion in 1949 to $13.7 billion
on February 16, 1966. Mean
time, U.S. foreign aid agencies
have paid many billions of dol
lars for domestically produc
ed commodities sent as gifts
to foreign recipients. Since
tbU tffces goods out of our
economy without a correspon
ding reduction in purchasing
power, it is Inflationary."
