ARE Y O U A MIDDLE-OF-THE-ROADER?
!f you are a hfrddle-of-the-roader, actually realiiing the full por
tent of that descriptive phrase, we propose to te ll you, in as kindly
a way as possible, how disappointed we are in you. To profess be
ing a m iddle-of-the-roader is to confess that one is incapable of
honorable conviction in any matter and is w illing to gerrymander
to either side of the road which may seem at the moment ,
expedient to satisfy one's selfish interests.

We are indebted far these thoughts on m iddle-of-the-roadism to
farmer Representative Donald Jackson of California. In one o f his
recent broadcasts, he described the malady fully, also disavowing
credit far originating the ideas expressed; i f we remember correct
ly , he gave credit to some writer for the American Conservative
Union. At any rate, we are delighted to pass the remarks on here

should be accomplished in only a few moments. I f anyone desires

We suspect that this column would be rated by many of our
friends, and near-friends, as dyed-in-the-w ool conservative.
We also suspect that we feel honored by any such rating. But t*« »
as it may, we declare without hesitancy, that we find in our
heart some sound respect for the honest, dyed-in-the-w ool lib
eral, but little , if any, respect for die avowed midcfie-of-the

Senator Dodd of Connecticut presents rather a paradox in our Con
gress. For years he has recognised the threat of Communism and
particularly their infiltration and subversive tactics a ll over our l a
nd, and has worked ceaselessly to thwart their activities. O f cour
se, then, he has been included among those of us who are the obj
ects of Intellectualist jibes about witch-hunting for Commies under
beds and In closets. But the Senator doesn't seem to mind any
more than the rest of us do.
On the other hand, Senator Dodd is the author o f a b ill now befo
re Congress, to restrict the ownership of firearms by American c it
izens. Now we are not saying that I f this b ill is passed, we w ill a ll
have to grab the gun* from our households, stack them in the yard
and have them carried o ff to the armory. This b ill w ill c a ll only
for the registry of arms, and presumably, our ownership and use of
firearms would continue as always. Mr. Dodd and the other high
boys who are concerned about the matter, say it would gradually dc
