Mercy Flight
By TB Group
Mercy Flights, Inc., has been
given a donation of $500 to help
with the purchase of a new
plane by the Jackson County
Tuberculosis and Health associ
ation. it was announced today
by Mrs Vernon Thorpe, treas
urer of the association.
The donation was voted by
the board of directors of the
TB and Health Association using
funds from a bequest made to
the association by Bennie E.
Westgate, an area resident un
til his death last year.
Because Mercy Flights has in
turn agreed to transport patients
with tuberculosis needing emer
gency treatment at the Oregon
State Sanitorium in Salem, the
donation will benefit the Jack-
son County Health department
as well as TB patients and their
families. Dr. A. E. Merkel,
county health officer stated to
day Tuberculosis is a commun
icable disease and the health de
partment is, therefore, charged
with legal responsibility for
transportation and care of TB
patients to prevent further in
fections No isolation facilities
for extended care are available
in the county for treatment of
TB and patients are asked to
go to the sanitorium in Salem,
Dr. Merkel explained.

from other areas than those
flown to outside facilities.

Department reported recently

during 1965. During 1964 there
were 164 cases investigated and
134 were handled in 1963.
Officials said a breakdown of
the figure shows 85 cases were
natural death, 79 accidental, 12
suicide, one homicide, two crib
deaths, and one by tetanus.
The motor vehicle and motor
vehicle-pedestrian deaths are of
a major concern, investigators
said. A number of these types
can be attributed to being un
der the influence of alcohol at
the time of the accident. Offi
cials also said this was true in
some cases of fire and drown
ing.
