It was a cold, cold night
lor the Central Point Rescue
Squad when they were called
by state police Sunday night
to a point six miles above
T ra il where a vehicle had left
the highway and plunged Into
the Rogue River.
A search Is still underway for

are wondering If perhaps some
person* in the outlying area
could come to the rescue this
tim e to offer a few small
things that would he apprecia
ted. Number one, the fellows
really need a camera. Any
type of flash camera would
be appreciated and it does
not have to be a new one. The
camera would be used to take
picture* on rescue call* for the
news m edia. Certainly some
one must have a camera lying
about the house which Is no
longer used. Also they are
badly In need of a new «living
mask for rescue operations.
Donation* for the mask may
be sent to the Fire Department
or to the Tim es office. A n d ..
anybody got an old perculator?
Many times the boy* are out
a ll hour* of the night and a
good cup o f hot coffee would
sure taste wonderful. They
could hook a pot up to the
generator o n which the flood
light* work. The boys havrnt
asked for these things but a
little birdie told me they are
sorely needed. So- what are
we going to do about It?

winner in the boys division of
the Youth Leadership Contest
of the Benevolent and Protec
tive Order of Elks.
Two contestants in each
division, one boy and one girl,
were entered in the local con
test by a ll of th e high school*
Luther's wife, Pearl Eileen
Lambert, also 43, was trans
ported by ambulance to Ro
gue V alley M em orial Hospital
where she is reported in lair
condition. Mrs. Lambert told
police she managed to open
a door after the car went into
the river. A passing motorist
noticed car tracks leaving the
highway and stopped to inves
tigate. He helped Mrs. Lam
bert up the steep bank and
notified officers.
Four members of the Res
cue Unit responded to the call.
They were‘*Lloy Sutton, Assis
tant Fire Chief; barry Hurd,
Captain of the rescue squad;
Lt. Francis Marshall and Jerry
O'Connor, first aid man.
Hurd, a trained diver,
entered th e river In search of
the vehicle, hampered by
darkness and no underwater
lights. After a one hour search
he located the car in some
10 feet of water. With the
help of the other men, !..■ was
able to place grappler hooks
on the vehicle so It could be
pulled from the muddy and
turbulent waters by a tow
truck.
The Rescue Squad used a ll
their lighting equipment, ropes
grapple hooks and diving
gear in the process.
The cold, hungry and wet
crew returned home at 5* IS am
six hours after the rescue c all.
Comments from the crew?
"Boy! What we wouldn't have
given for a hot cup of coflee
in that sub-freezing tempera
ture! "
