With a vote of 58 to 9 the Senate endorsed Hoover’s
stand on the Naval Parley which will place a limit upon
the ships to be built by the United States, Great Bri
tain and Japan.
The text of the treaty has not been
made pubic although we feel sure that the representa
tives of our several states made sure they were not in
criminating themselves when they placed their votes in
favor of the pact. We were somewhat surprised at the
heavy vote in favor of the president’s position after read
ing the reports which had gained circulation through the
public press about secrecy, etc.
It leads one to draw
either one or two conclusions. Either the Treatj was
all right or the Senate is all wrong.
Judge McMahan of the Oregon Supreme Court
states in a communication to the Oregonian that it is not
within the precepts of the members of the State Central
committee to write a platform for the candidate they
will choose to fill the vacancy on the Republican’s ticket,
to run on.
In-so-far as Mr. George Joseph was elected to be
the Republican candidate for governor at the May pri
mary, it would be nothing more than justice to the elec
torate of the state to choose a man to succeed him who
is in accord with the principles propounded by Mr. Joseph.
There are those who claim that it was Mr. Joseph’s
personality which won for him the nomination and not
his principles but we hesitate to approve of this theory.
It is true that Mr. Joseph was an ardent campaigner. He
was forceful in his convictions and in his pronouncement
of what he felt was right. There is no argument but
that the platform upon which the successful candidate
ran embodied some drastic planks but never-the-less they
dealt with real problems that are facing the state of Ore
gon citizenry. Due to the fact that Mr. Joseph won the
Republican nomination upon the platform which he cham
pioned we feel that it would be breaking faith with the
members of the party who made his nomination possible
should the Central Committee see fit to place a man at
the head of the ticket who does not agree with the prin
cipies of Mr. Joseph’s platform.
There is already some talk of an independent can
didate taking the field if the Central Committee does not
appoint such a man and we feel that the supporters of
Mr. Joseph would be justified in such an action.
It
would not necessarily mean that the Independent would
win but it would mean that the people would be given
an opportunity to express themselves upon some very im
portant measures which are becoming greater problems
in Oregon as time goes by.
Before another week goes by, no doubt a candidate
will be appointed and the battle will be on. The voters
will watch with avid interest the results.
