The following plea for increased in­
terest in public school matters in Oregon
has been sent out by State School
Superintendent L. R. Alderman:
To the Patrons o f Oregon Schools:
W e do not attach sufficient import-
adee to our annual school meeting.
This year our annual meeting occurs
June 17. On this day one director and
the clerk are to be elected in every
school district in Oregon, a matter of
much importance to each community.
I should be very glad, indeed, to tind
that many o f the Oregon school dis­
tricts were making the day o f the an­
nual school meeting an important oc­
casion, and at the same time taking
advantage o f being together to talk
over the problems o f the schools.
The voting for director and clerk will
take place at the school house. It
should be remembered that women al­
ready have the privilege o f suffrage in
school elections. I f all the women of
the community will pack their lunch
baskets, and assemble at the school
house on the morning o f June 17 I am
confident that the men will be there
also when the sun reaches the meridian.
O f course, the members o f the fam ­
ily under voting age will have to have
dinner. So all will spread out their
lunches under som pleasant shade, and
enjoy dinner together.
A fter a good dinner all will be in the
right frame o f mind for selecting the
officers, and disnussing school affairs.
The patrons will have this opportunity
to investigate the conditions o f the
school house and grounds, and see what
repairs are needed; whether the school
house is properly heated, lighted and
ventilated, and what books and pictures
are most needed. Let us make June
17 a red letter day for our district!

Riding a motorcycle at a rattling clip
on Jackson street, Medford, Sunday
afternoon, John Adkins o f that city
had a close call from instant death
when his machine collided with the

train. Charles Verbec, who was riding
another motorcycle was just a neck
ahead o f Adkins and was safe. The
pilot o f the engine struck Adkins wheel
center and landed the rider on top o f
the pilot and well out o f harm’s way.
The engineer saw Verbec make his get­

struck anybody until he stopped his
train at the Medford station when
Adkins was found sitting unconcerned­
ly on top o f the pilot with his arms
folded, both legs broken and a rather
bad cut on his head. He was taken to
the hospital and given every attention,
and his injuries were not considered
dangerous.
