Portland, Ore., December 21, 1908.
(Special Correspondence.)
Fifty school children from Chicago
are to be brought to the Alaska-Yukon-
Pacitic Exposition next year if the plan
suggested bv Secretary Tom Richard
son o f the Oregon Development League
is carried out. They will also visit
Portland and other cities in this state
and when they return home will write
letters telling o f the trip and what they
saw in the Northwest. Exhibits o f the
woods o f this section, with industrial
and scenic pictures, have been used in
the Chicago schools, made up into sets
and circulated from one school to an
other, in the teaching o f geography.
C. A. Kinne, secretary o f the El Paso,
Texas, Chamber o f Commerce, is mak
ing a tour o f the Coast and is spending
considerable time in Oregon communi
ties studying the publicity methods of
the various commercial bodies. Mr.
Kinne’ s organization is building a $50,-
000 building o f its own, and is deter
mined that the work it undertakes shall
be effective.
The Northwest Electric Light &
Power Association, embracing Oregon,
Washington, Idaho and Montana, held
a two days’ session in the ccnvention
hall o f the Portland Commercial Club
last week. Every state had numerous
delegates and the meeting was one o f
the best they have ever held. The
Northwest has attracted the brightest
men from the technical schools o f the
country.
Poultry raisers are taking lots of
interest in the coming show o f the Lane
County Poultry Association at Eugene
December 21st to 24th. Handsomely
engraved silver trophies will be given
as prizes. The poultry product o f Ore
gon is valued at five million dollars an
nually.
Dr. Stephen S. Wise, Rabbi o f the
Free Synagogue o f New York City,
retains an ardent affection for the
Pacifiic Northwest, his residence for
several years. In commenting on the
prize apples recently sent to European
rulers and exhibited in New York, he
w rites: “ Why is this fruit sent to such
indifferent Oregonians a i Edward, Wil
helm, Nicholas and Mr. Fallieres? If
you really want Oregon apples to count
don’ t waste them on European mon-
archs, but get them into the systems of
Oregonians, who love and treasure
everything Oregonian from little Mount
Hood to big Oregon apples. But the
apples wouldn’ t be kept long on exhibi
tion in our homes here; they would
vanish as the mist hovering over the
Bumrait o f Mount Hood before the
morning sun.’ ’
The convention o f the Oregon State
Dairy Association at Salem last week
was the most successful ever held by
that body. Washington and California
were represented in both attendance
and exhibits. The grand prize for best
display o f dairy products was awarded
to F. A. Schubinger, o f Salem, for an
exhibit comprising twenty-six varieties
•d cheese. The Douglal Creanrery Co.,
o f Roseburg, won first award for high
est scoring creamery butter, F G.
Mattke, o f Sweet Home, for highest
scoring dairy butter, and T. J. Ballan-
tyne, o f Hobsonville, for highest scor
ing cheese. The dairymen pledged a
fund o f $160 per i»/mtb for the employ
ment o f an expert to bring dairy condi
tions throughout the state up to the
highest possible Rtandard. An appro
priation o f $0000 will he asked from the
Legislature. President F. L. Kent, o f
Corvallis, was re-elreteHL with Carl
Abrams, o f Salem, secretary. The time
of next year's meeting will be chosen
to harmonize with the date selected by
the Washington Dairymen, who meet
at Chehalis this week. Hon C. L.
Mitchell, o f the Dairy Division, U. S.
Department o f Agriculture, is in Che-
halis for this meeting.
