THE UNO IRAUDS.
The more or less famous —or
to he correct, infamous—Oregon
land fraud cases seem to be, to
use an old slang phrase, “ peter
ing out.” In the case against
Hall, Stiewer, Hendricks et al,
the man Hall seems to be in the
position of “ holding the sack”
for the entire aggregation of
alleged swindlers, the other
honorable gentlemen (?) com
prising an ex-state senator, an
ex-U. S. Commissioner and other
more or less celebrities of the old
time Oregon political regime,
having been given an immunity
bath in consideration of saddling
the burden o f the apparently
nasty mess on Hall. Hall, it
seems, according to the testi
mony, was remiss to the extent
o f doing what he could to shield
from prosecution the big guns of
the Butte Creek Co., who were
in a position to give him more or
less political help in holding on
'to his office.
Hendricks and
Stiewer, who appear to have
been the chief beneficiaries in
the great land gobbling game in
Wheeler County, get ofF easy by
turning against Hall and the
leaser lights in the Butte Creek
■game,
will probably also go
clear, because it would hardly
look good to cinch them after
letting their principals off.
If there have been, land frauds
’ in Oregon—and who doubts it?—
-and if the former political boss
•of Wheeler and Gilliam counties,
•who tried to steal almost half a
•county, and the former U. S.
official, who is charged with hav
ing prostituted his office in an
"endeavor to assist his political
god and business associate in the
crooked work, are guilty, it is to
be deplored that conditions and
the law are such that they should
be given immunity in order that
their political friend should be
convicted.
