which caused the big slide on the South-

here from the scene, Branstettcr is

ern Pacific bad expensive slides at this
point, which it is alleged are due to
Branstetter's irrigation ditch, but the
present one is the most extensive and
expensive one'the company has yet had
to contend with. It is over 300 feet
long and is from ’ 0 to 12 feet in depth
across the track for this distance. Two
big steam shovels and 200 or 300 men
are at work removing the obstruction
but with the best possible progress sev­
eral days will be required to clear it.
Meantime trains are running to Mott
from the north and to Dunsmuir from
the south and the wagon transfers
made between these points five miles
apart.
It is said the railroad company has
repeatedly offered to purchase Branstet-
ter'a property as a matterof protection
and has offered him as much as $6000
for the place, which it is generally con­
ceded is much more than it is worth for
the returns it will yield its owner year
by year. Branatetter it is Raid has a
