conference wan held at the W hite
House thia evening by the preaident.
Admiral Dewev. Secretary of the Navy
Morton, Sir W illiam W hite, formerly
naval ch ef of the British navy, Ad­
m iral Cappea, chief naval conatrnctor
of the United State« navy, Rear Admir­
al Converse, chief of bureau of naviga­
tion, Rear Adr. i al Frederick Rodger«,
Rear Admiral R. D. Evan» and Com­
mander Sim«, inspector of target prac­
tice of the United States navy.
The
general «object of battleship const i ac­
tion was considered at the conference,
view» being exchanged between Sir

W hite and the
American
naval officer«.
The conference was called by the
president, Sir W illiam W hite being
asked to attend. Sir W illiam favored
the construction of fighting «hip« and
not those that could run away. This
met with the president’« approval
The idea found favor to have »old many
of the gunboat« and cruiser«, purchased
during the recent war, which are
maintained at great exj>en«e, and whose
complement of officei« could be uned
advantageously on the new battleships
Dewey Offers to Assume Command.
Washington,
Oct.
14.— Admiral
Ilewey has again offered to assume com­
mand of the combined fleet in the Car­
ibbean sea and direct the winter man­
euvers. If his services can be spared
from the presidency of the general
board at that, time Secretary Morton
w ill certainly accept the adm iral’«
offer. It is probable the admiral will
leave in the Mayflower early in the
new year and assume command of the
fleet at Guantanamo.
1 he fleet w ill
reach Guantanamo between January 8
and 10.
